Zero smoke alarms, since the house was an older one that was about to be remodeled (my mom was the interior designer; his mom was the friend and client).

They calmed down about it when they knew we weren't blowing things up, but the smoke was intense enough to cease the activity. We were in a workroom that was off the kitchen, and the door *was* shut, but it still wasn't smart to do it inside.

I set some off on New Year's Eve with my beloved for the first time since then...and it was magic all over again.
