I am embarrassed to admit how many wrong books I have e-purchased.

In addition to making a mistake, you can also be duped by Amazon's mobile site set-up. They have it rigged where the first click you make on a book page is a purchase. This irritates the hell out of me. If your connection is a little slow and you click twice because your not sure if your first click registered, you've just made a purchase.

How many books do you think that other Stephen King sold because of the name? The last time I searched, that other guy didn't come up. Maybe Amazon is starting to be a little more careful about that stuff. I noticed there is a 2nd Joe Hill out there too.

What "other" Stephen King? She is not using his name. Her name is not similar.

You think she is stealing, so what do you think she should do? I really do not understand.

~~~
Sometimes a good author goes unknown. Sometimes through hardwork they make it. Probably most often, those that make it are good authors AND somehow catch a break. If she's good, this break could make her career.
And then of course, there are the authors that are not good but somehow get a break anyway, and if there's enough sparkles and sex they can live off the proceeds of one poorly written book.
Yes, that is who I was referring to. I've been known to veer off topic. ;-D
OK, gotcha!
To bad they don't do like actors. Even if it is their legal name, they are not allowed to use another actors name. Michael Fox could not use that name because at some time there was an actor that used that name. So, he went with Michael J. Fox. (His middle initial is A., but be thought it was inappropriate to call himself a fox. Lol)
If she had written a book with the same name after Sai King's in an effort to cash in, then yeah. That would be underhanded and reprehensible. But hers was already out there. It's not her fault if there were errors in the Amazon listing, or if people didn't make sure what they were buying. I don't think it's stealing if she keeps the money. They bought it. They read it. They got what they paid for, even if it isn't what they were expecting.
What will be interesting is what happens after this. She got the international spotlight over this, so the pressure's on for her next book. Will she live up to the attention? Or is this her only 15 minutes. If she's any good, she can spin this flash of publicity into a real career.
Not that Mr. King needs the money that Ms. Schultz netted after erronious sales of her Joyland, but you'd think Amazon would cough up the amount in question and donate it to charity in SK's name, or something. It's the principle of it: the sales were meant to be for his book, not hers. Amazon screwed up.
Amazon's error doesn't change the fact that she's still tacky for publicizing their mistake and what she's doing with the profits from it.
She did ask them to correct it and they did not. Publicizing their mistake probably means less sales of her book. And why not publicize their mistake? If they were ignoring it after being informed of it, publicity often works.
Lepplady, I agree. If she is a good author this is her chance.
She has returned the favour by buying a copy of his book Joyland
"PURCHASE: Joyland by Stephen King
COST: $12.95
Last night Stephen King responded to Entertainment Weekly about this project of mine. He graciously said, “I’m delighted for her, and I’m going to order her book.” So I bought his book too. He also has a new novel out, Mr. Mercedes, which you can buy here.
I’m glad he saw the humor of the project and the situation that put our two books together through a twist of fate and Amazon algorithms.
Thanks to everyone who shared and wrote about this blog. I’ve got a little more money to spend, which I’ll continue to document here next week"
:beguiled:
:m_adore: If nothing else, you cannot fault Mr. King for getting a good laugh out of the whole situation. Like she said, she asked Amazon to change it when she first found out, but they ignored her! :reading: I hope she enjoys reading Stephen's "Joyland" - who knows? She may become a Constant Reader :m_enamored:
You're right. Nobody (even the best) ever gets successful without a lucky break or two along the way. This is one of those lucky breaks that gets her name out there so this could be a good opportunity for her.
I hope she takes advantage of the free advertising. I am sure that right from the beginning it was never her intention to deceive anyone. You have to read her blog and see what she has used the money on to see that she is not an extravagant person (well perhaps except for the Indian dinner out which was a real splurge for her).
every time i download a book, it has the author's name on it.....so, how do you make this mistake unless you're just not paying attention?
The funny thing is, i'm looking at the Barnes and Noble site right now and Stephen's JL is only $6.57 while Emily's is $10.95 (Nook) and $13.47 (paperback). It pays to pay attention...lol
