While I am not liking the characters( except for the kid who brought a knife to school) I think it's a pretty good show.I have a hard time with how people react to the dead rising.I sit at home saying,"What are you doing! What an idiot!" ALOT during most zombie shows/movies. But it dawns on me that most people probably WOULD be in complete denial when faced with a zombie.
I guess that's a good thing for many of us because all those people will be milling around as zombie bait, giving us a better chance:0:

Executive producer Dave Erickson says: "We start off with a slow burn in our first few episodes because we had the opportunity to explore the dysfunction that comes with family. We also wanted to have characters who were completely ill-equipped for the apocalypse."

the dysfunction that comes with family
. That's quite a thought provoking phrase, yes?

I was wondering if the mom had used to keys to get into the school, how did Tobias get into the school? Did she leave the door unlocked? surely not. Plus, they had no food to put into the car.
One thing has been bugging me since the second show-[/QUOTE]
That, and
why does the kid need that specific knife? In all LA,he can't find another blade,lol..ah well,I guess the story needed a deus ex machina to get him and mom the guidance counselor together in the school..

The scene with Nick choking....that was so hard for me to watch? I know two people who died that way....one quite recent. Neither were people really close to me, but I couldn't help but think how bad that would have been for their families watching.
Nick did that on purpose to keep his sister from leaving the house. He later told mom "She tried to leave. I stopped her."
Sly fellow, he.

I think they ditched the food and ran for it after she
bashed the principal's head in with the fire extinguisher. Tobias should have stayed with her. He said it in the first episode. It's safer with more people.

I think he was hiding in the school and saw her come in. That's just the line he used. He's a smart kid. I'm sure he'll equip himself with something a lot sturdier. He's the one character I see going the distance. So it'll be all the more shocking when they kill him.

Okay. I know I'm late to the party, but I only just watched the second episode. Here's what I think.
Splitting the family up so that they'd have to find their way back to each other to play upon our emotions was predictable and forced. I don't like being manipulated as a viewer. Same thing with the phones working for a few minutes, JUST long enough to say "where are you?" ...etc, then cutting off again with static. On an iphone? Static? Really? I know it's creepy and all, but we're talking about cell phones. They work or they don't. There's no hard-wired connection to go kablooey like there are/were with land lines. WAAAY forced.
Also,
I think they're trying way too hard to force mom down our throats as a badass. It's not some natural progression, like it would be in that situation. She's been posturing from minute one. Again, too forced. I kinda hope she bites it.
We did get to see some kill shots and shuffling walkers, so that makes it more like TWD we know and love. And we saw the police stockpiling like douchebags. Which is reprehansible. And completely accurate. I have no doubt that persons in a position of authority would use it to their advantage. Were I a cop, I probably would too, if I'm honest. The world is going to sh*t. Fast. And that's what we signed up for.
I still like Nick. He's not physically imposing, but he's sneaky and he's clever. And he cares about his family. He and Travis (?) are my favorites.
I like Matt (?) too. He's a good guy. He knows he's a goner and doesn't want to take the girl he loves with him.
I really like that they're setting this version of the end of the world in a major metropolitan area. On TWD, we've pretty much watched a gaggle of people we've come to care about wander around the woods for five seasons, trying not to die. In LA, we get to see what happens to civilization as it dies. Incredulity, realization, then dread when the lights go out. And here we are so tethered to our iphones, how prepared would any of us be? It's a completely different premise in many ways. I like it.

I'm still having problems with the characters... they just don't seem real. I watched The Strain after I watched the second ep of FearTWD and the characters in The Strain somehow pull off being real even though their situation is just as unbelievable.

I guess there will never be a successful zombie invasion in Texas. Too many of us own chain saws lol.

We don't know the characters in FTWD as well as those in The Strain yet. We just watched the second epi and though I have some big questions about character interaction and I have a feeling I've seen the scene with the people trapped in a store while a riot is going on before; it was still a fast hour and we'll stick with it for a while longer.

I caught that he said that, but

faking choking to death is not an easy thing to do, even when not going through withdrawal. He may have been trying to convince himself he did it to save her, or maybe said it to convince his mom that he has some redeeming quality. Or, just pointed out, "I stopped her" because even though it was his addiction, he still wants some credit for a change.

Please, don't be angry with me about this comment.

But,
during the scene where the crowd was gathered because the police had shot the unarmed, homeless guy....did anyone else expect the crowd to start chanting "black lives matter"? I'm not trying to turn this in to a political discussion. But so much of that scene just seemed so much like the news.

It does seem an awful like so much stuff that is currently going on today.
