My sources, i.e., other forums, say the pilot is incredibly boring and filled with dull, unengaging characters who serve only to annoy.
Chicago Trib said pretty much the same thing about the first ep, but also said that it became more engaging as the show went on. I'm a story and character development gal myself, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt--some of the things that popular wisdom has held as 'boring' on the original show have been my favorite bits.

I beg to differ. They had me from the beginning. And I like to think I'm pretty hard to please. Especially when it comes to a show that likely only exists because of the success of the show it's spun off from. I have an immense distaste for that sort of thing. But from the very start, I was able to enjoy this show on its own, regardless of its affiliation with TWD.

I also see the potential for that kid, the teenage guy, to be the next Johnny Depp.

Fairly boring for me. It started to pick up at the end but... ended.
Was the mom bit? I agree crackhead was the most interesting character so far. What I would like to see is the fight to get out of the city. It has to be on the way. Living in an urban setting is a recipe for disaster surely. Remember Atlanta?
Ah well, I'm a sucker for all things zombie. Like you can't tell from my avatar.

Tom...er....I mean Nick ;) really is like a young Johnny Depp. I kept thinking that too.

I agree with the rest of your post too. Though...this one time, I did allow myself some excitement looking forward to the first show.

There's something else I want to say....but no spoilers for another hour. And I'm not staying up that late. Hopefully I remember it tomorrow.

(I'm not complaining Dana Jean. I understand that as a mod, you get stuck with it even with spoiler tags. )

It's okay, we can't get this show here, so chuck it in a spoiler and I'll read this thread for the other mods.

OK. :)

the scene on the highway ramp, which various characters watch on the Internet...why does NO ONE say "bath salts"?

We have had previous discussions about how something can pull you out of the show, because it is unrealistic (in a show about zombies, lol). Well...that moment pulled me out of the show.

Ah. Spoilers. Forgot about that. Not that my question actually revealed anything. Anyway if you can't make an interesting story out of the end of the world then hang it up as a writer. Seriously. I've read the most pathetic sixth grade writing on kindle that still managed an engaging story.

Where the devil is the spoiler tag anyway?
The second time I watched it looked like the dad got bit.

Ha. I had just figured by quoting a post with a spoiler how to simply type it in but thanks.

I kind of like the dad so I hope it wasn't him bit. He is a pleaser and I identify even to a cringe point of recognition. Also he had London's "To Build a Fire" as a story for Lit class and I love London. Also very foreshadowing of a story in relation to survival. Many of London's stories were- War, The Unexpected, the one about starvation I can't recall the name of just now, a lot of them. London was a superb story teller and in all was a bit of moral and absolute truth particularly about the harshness of nature and man. Hell of a live by the seat of his pants man too. Absolutely fearless. Read "Sailor on Horseback" by Irving sometime. One hell of a man. Anyway, I like the dad best so far so that means he will die first.

Can we put spoilers in spoiler tags? That way people who haven't watched it yet won't get, well... spoiled.

I think the sister, ex wife and step brother are the most disposable characters. And the sister's boyfriend. They're all just sort of... there. The core family of the mom, the husband and the son seem to be the focus of the show. I hope dad didn't get bit.
