I thought the mom was a good actor in her recurring role on LOST, and I still felt it transferring over to this show... (I imagine that was part of the reason Jorge Garcia appeared on the Talking Dead... and one of them brought up bath salts there)

at one point riding in the car with her daughter, she calls her on her actually caring a great deal about her brother while pretending really hard not to. Then we see the jello scene. But yeah, weird moment of sexual chemistry there.

Excellent post...you explained my feelings, better than I could have. :)

Regarding the part quoted here in spoiler tags. I think I get it, but not sure I can articulate it.

She loves her brother. I think he's older, but she feels like the older sister...he needs more mothering than one person can give. She knows he's a drug addict...a lost cause. But she still cannot turn her back on him...just in case. In case this time he really does turn his life around....in case this time turning her back he dies and it will all feel like it's her fault.

Her head knows. But her heart....her heart is somewhere else.

Hmmm. I wonder if that's what the quasi-incestuous actions were supposed to portray?
Good way to put it.
The suggestive nature of her actions with her brother could have been dismissed if she'd had at leas that much chemistry with her boyfriend.

I liked the first episode, it was a bit slow for my taste but they are developing a story line and characters so I get it. The son really brought to mind Johnny Depp (as he did for others here) I think this actor has great potential, he plays his part very well. I am already looking forward to next Sunday!

What I liked about him is that he committed to his reactions. When he freaked out, he really freaked out. When he screamed, it was from the gut, not one of these fake Hollywood screams. I think he's got a future.

That's the thing, though. These are people who haven't lived in that world yet. These are normal people teetering on the edge of the world of TWD. I think
the son's reaction - major freak out- was spot on. Especially since he uses drugs. He doesn't know what's real and what's not. I think the mom and dad should have freaked out a little more when that walker kept getting up even though dude ran him over a few times with a truck.
We don't know how they'll react. We didn't know that Carol would become such a badass. Rick was a sheriff, so he was used to dealing with stressful situations. We only ever knew Michonne as a badass because that's how we met her. Point is, we met ALL the characters of TWD after the shoe already dropped. What we're seeing with FTWD is a family that hasn't had to really deal with that yet, on a global scale. WE know what's coming, but they don't.
Well, the kid in school with a knife does. I see him being a survivor.
I see a lot of potential, here.
I do hope I will be proven wrong, but as of now I just don't see any of these actors or characters obtaining a believable killer instinct needed for apocalyptic survival.

Most people that you see walking around on the street don't seem like killers. They're just people trying to figure life out. But put in a life-or-death situation, most of them discover that they're capable of. I think that's what they're shooting for on this show. That these are average people who haven't faced that situation yet. When they do, we'll see what they're made of.

Agreed. But interest has more to do with how someone cuts a zombie's head off then if they merely could do it or not.

How believable would it be if day one they all knew how and were capable of killing a zombie? In a world that never before saw zombies?

Most people believe if it walks and bites it must be alive, and even in self defence would have a difficult time actually killing.

I think so too, one day I think people will look back to where he got his big start and it'll be FTWD.
Ah, but it wasn't. He got his start in the Harry Potter movies. He played young Tom Riddle in the Half Blood Prince.
;)
And he attended the Royal Academy of dramatic art for three years.
This Frank Dillane is no flash in the pan.

\I won't see it until tomorrow (comes on HULU at midnight tonight, and school starts tomorrow)! I'm cautiously optimistic :)

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know it would be available on Hulu.

OK. :)

the scene on the highway ramp, which various characters watch on the Internet...why does NO ONE say "bath salts"?

We have had previous discussions about how something can pull you out of the show, because it is unrealistic (in a show about zombies, lol). Well...that moment pulled me out of the show.

Ha! I understand. My big you-have-to-be-kidding, SMH moment

When the nurse untied one of young Johnny Depp teen restraints. Young man was bought in when he tried to commit suicide by running into traffic (that's what they thought) being hit. He has heroin in his system and Psych has been called to evaluate him. And she undoes one restraint? Umm...NO. You undo one hand and...they will use that hand to undo the other restraint. And get away. Like he did.
