I think the sister, ex wife and step brother are the most disposable characters. And the sister's boyfriend. They're all just sort of... there. The core family of the mom, the husband and the son seem to be the focus of the show. I hope dad didn't get bit.

Possibly (hopefully)
the sister, ex-wife, step-brother are characters that just weren't developed in this one show. They were introduced, but they were not focal.

Not a single one of them. It's like they said "let's take everything that made TWD successful and throw it out the window, and we'll go NCIS instead." I can't envision a single character gaining the edginess needed for a Walking Dead spin-off. I'm going to be rooting for the walkers.

Isn't that the point?
These people are living in the pre-apocolyptic world. They need to develop that edginess.

I hate to say it...This had better step up its game. I realize that they have to do the groundwork for the ZA to occur. However, I was going to say I could at this point care less, if any of those characters turned. Perhaps next week will get more invested.

I love the fact that they are tearing up the WD rule book and giving us dowdy characters , we gotta journey with these guys - a typically boring family with daily issues we all face: drugs teens split families and dependancies . Wait until it all goes to pete tong - and they have to stick a fork into their neighbours eye .

IMO Whoever did the casting for this thing needs to be fed to the walkers.

I agree with DiO on this. I didn't much for any of the characters, BUT it being only the first episode, maybe some of them will warm up to me as the show goes on. Plot-wise, I understand that this is the start of the zombie apocalypse, so I'm pretty intrigued how it starts to unfold. I'll keep watching.

Well I was finally able to see it and I actually did really enjoy it. Acting was a teeny bit touch and go, but I liked the characters and I'm suitably engaged. I thought it was very amusing, however, how the sister seemed to display far more sexual chemistry with her brother, than with her boyfriend.

That's the thing, though. These are people who haven't lived in that world yet. These are normal people teetering on the edge of the world of TWD. I think
the son's reaction - major freak out- was spot on. Especially since he uses drugs. He doesn't know what's real and what's not. I think the mom and dad should have freaked out a little more when that walker kept getting up even though dude ran him over a few times with a truck.
We don't know how they'll react. We didn't know that Carol would become such a badass. Rick was a sheriff, so he was used to dealing with stressful situations. We only ever knew Michonne as a badass because that's how we met her. Point is, we met ALL the characters of TWD after the shoe already dropped. What we're seeing with FTWD is a family that hasn't had to really deal with that yet, on a global scale. WE know what's coming, but they don't.
Well, the kid in school with a knife does. I see him being a survivor.
I see a lot of potential, here.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that about the sister.
I totally don't get her. In one scene, she's telling mom to write him off, and in the next, she's lovingly feeding him Jell-o. What's up with that?

Exactly. I think that's what I like about it. They don't see it coming. How will they react? How would any of us?

Excellent post...you explained my feelings, better than I could have. :)

Regarding the part quoted here in spoiler tags. I think I get it, but not sure I can articulate it.

She loves her brother. I think he's older, but she feels like the older sister...he needs more mothering than one person can give. She knows he's a drug addict...a lost cause. But she still cannot turn her back on him...just in case. In case this time he really does turn his life around....in case this time turning her back he dies and it will all feel like it's her fault.

Her head knows. But her heart....her heart is somewhere else.

Hmmm. I wonder if that's what the quasi-incestuous actions were supposed to portray?
