yeah...I saw a headline about Winnipeg...coooooold! Shoveled some of the garage roof off yesterday...the snow toward the bottom was 30" deep, multi-layered...had one layer about 3-4" thick and hard at the bottom....another layer on top of that about 6" deep...another on top of that one about 20" or so mostly hard compacted and 10" or so of fluff on top. The same amount is on the neighbor's house to the north of me...resting on a metal roof. Soon as we have our January thaw, that snow is going to slide off and crash into our house. This has been happening for...20 years? And the crazy thing is that in the past (this is the first year it has not happened) the neighbors (an older couple one passed on the other in a home) would look out their living room window as I shoveled the garage roof off...the lady inside doing the sister-act, her head bobbing and weaving, shaking her blue-veined fist at me...the old guy coming out at some point to tell me "you'll never work in this town again."

Because I shoveled my freakin' garage roof off. And if that doesn't take the cake, the neighbor on the other side of them (pals) comes running over shaking his fist at me, gets in my face, and tells me he's going to focking kill me. Wife inside heard him. Called The Law that time. All for shoveling my garage roof off. Imagine 20 winters of that happening and wonder that one could maintain a happy place. Last winter I didn't shovel the garage roof...simply because all the grief I've had to endure simply wasn't worth it...that...and the snowfall wasn't as much. But roofs collapse all the time if they're not tended to. And since I'm self-employed, carpenter...and work is hard to come by over the winter...his words still sting. And the sad and unfortunate truth is I know I've lost work because of The Word that has been passed down, verily...maybe that explains the nightmare last night. Will go out and finish the garage roof later on...knock on the neighbor's door and tell them I'm concerned about the snow avalanche that is waiting to smack into our house.

...but on a hopeful note...they venture outside to knock some of the snow off their roof...the snow that was obstructing their satellite dish. Progress. Onward & upward.

Walter - that sucks! If you are a self employed carpenter I hope that you did not lose work just due to 'word of mouth' and rumours. I don't think it's against the law to shovel off your own roof? So who lives there now, now that the old people have passed on?

The house sold this summer and a young lady and her daughter are living there now...we share the last name. The ironic thing about her moving in there is that her grandmother lived on the other side of us...and she was the one who had the metal roof installed...and...my first two or three winters back here, she was giving me grief about where I scooped my snow. Didn't have a snowblower at the time...used what has become known as a Yooper-Scooper. Anyway, she had her doctor son or some guy w/an expensive camera out there one day taking photos of where I'd scooped my snow...on my property...and then...that snow on her roof came crashing into our house a week or two later. I go to the kitchen window to look-see and she's looking out her window...ten feet away. I scoffed at her and the snow piled up against our house.

So when the one neighbor passed on--he'd been in a home for a time...and his wife moved into a home she's still with us...and when the house sold, the realtor asked us to sign a waiver or some such legal document--that house is across the property line, or a portion of it is across the line. When they built these old mining houses they didn't heed property lines nor were there nor are there now any setback limits. Anyway, the long and the short is I said I wasn't signing any waiver or...what was it...right-of-way or some such term. The thing is, they make a device that can be applied to metal roofs where snow/ice falling could hurt someone or some thing...but those were never installed. The few times I've tried talking to the negligent owner on that side--told him the snow avalanche cracked our foundation one year--that, and the gas meter and electrical meter are on that side of the house--he listened and the words went in one ear and straight out the other side. You could see a little puff of dust exit his left ear and his face brightened for a moment but then a shade passed over him again. Just went out to take more snow off the garage....doesn't look like the metal-roof neighbor is home but those layers of hardened snow/ice at the bottom have me worried. All that weight on his roof should have him worried, too.

But yeah...I know I've lost work because of the one neighbor...but at least the other one...the one who threatened to kill me wasn't outside a moment ago giving me The Look.

yikes..just after midnight,-11,windchill -35..it is freaky cold,a few seconds without gloves and the fingers go numb tonight..not a good night for pedestrians or animals, hope everyone is inside and warm and safe..:nerd:

Yes - you bet! I am just heading to bed shortly - I was waiting for hubby to come back from the Legion - luckily it is within walking distance of our house and so no drinking and driving - especially when the Police station is three doors down from our house!

I feel sorry for the poor little brown rabbit that hangs around our house. I put bread out for him. How they survive the extreme cold is absolutely amazing.
