Had one old snowblower throw a rod yesterday...crumps...then...get started with the newer blower, ten years old this one...and it throws a belt. Musta been that stray spring in the chassis when I put on the new belt the other day. So...I dig out the schematic, start the truck idling, grab a cup to go, and head off down the road to Dollar Bay, bent spring in pocket...it was obvious the newer-older blower was not going to work without some attention. I did finish the garage roof and was clearing that snow from alongside when all this went down. Got a replacement spring for the idler arm...that puts tension on the augur-belt...that would not stay on had I not gotten the spring....and then I decided the heck with it...new blower time.
Fortunately, I had a good year, work-wise...some money in the bank, work still coming in though it is winter. Ward let me take a new blower and I'll drop off a check this morning although I feel like a touch of the flu is coming on...that or just plain-old tiredness from roof shoveling. After I dug the snow out of the back of the truck and threw it onto Ward's pile of snow...the sun comes out. So...I stood by the door while Ward finished with some calls...thinking, yeah, just so...this is what I needed to do to get the sun to shine...buy a new snow-blower. Some salesman-guy from the Rockin' Eagle came in as we're headed out the door with the blower...and I told him he could thank me the sun is shining...that I like chocolates...just saying. Gave him a card. Still cold, though...single digits.
I might get up on the neighbor''s metal roof and take some of that snow off before it crashes into our house. I wonder what 50' x 20' x 75" of snow translates into, weight? Must be some way to calculate that. Course, we had a couple rains, too, early December...an inch or so of that on the roof, frozen. Reminds me of this time Kris and I jumped off the cedar hedge...five years old...we're up there walking on top of the snow blanket...and we get stuck....two of us there in the yard, immobile. Imagined, earlier, me up on that roof and it letting go, sticking me between the houses...I'll carry the cell phone in the shirt pocket, case I have to call have the fire department come dig me out.
Fashion? to heck with that! Give me a nice warm parka and some mukluks (and maybe a pair of Arctic mitts as well)We have the strangest weather these days. It's 17 right now, will be back to upper 40s until Monday, then 16, but then 50 on Tue. It plays havoc with your fashion and your sinuses.

Walter, here are two links to help with calculating wt of snow on a roof. You be careful!

How to Keep Your Roof from Collapsing
What's your forecast low for tonight, Ms. Mod?
Low for today was -16 F (not including wind chill) and it's snowing but we're not getting hit like they are farther south. Yesterday set a record in Bangor for a new low on that date of -19 but Van Buren, ME was either -45 or -47 actual temperature--can't remember which but I guess at that point 2 degrees isn't going to make much difference. Snow tires have arrived at SAM's so will have them studded and installed tomorrow. And somewhat along the line of your snowblower, Walt, the snow tires may be having the same effect as Monday they're saying it will hit 46 and be raining. We'll see.
Only -16. The high forecast for today is zero.
How much snow did you get?
minus 20 - hah! Speaking as a former Torontonian who is foolishly now living in Winnipeg all I can say is - ("It is a wet cold out that way!) I'd visit me sis in Trawna but she's up to her ears in poodles and smokes like a chimney!Never heard of ice-quakes before, but apparently that's how cold it is here.
