Good gravy, CAT. Does that mean everyday after school for 6 weeks?

They are aware of his A- grades right?
Yes, every day for 6 weeks. You would think they would be aware! I help him with his homework when I can, but they have gone to this new math program where everything is taught differently. So as a result they don't like to send math homework home, because they don't want parents sitting them down and showing them the right way to do it. They have said that! The teachers themselves are still struggling with how to teach it. It is so complicated it is ridiculous. And what is double ridiculous, the math program is only done this way in elementary grades...next year when he goes to jr high, math is taught the same way we learned it. I don't expect him to have too much trouble, because he has only been exposed to this "new" way for 2 years. But, when the two younger kids hit jr high, I think they will struggle. Maybe not, but I don't like it.

Seems way to excessive to me for a kid who isn't bringing home C's D's of flunking entirely. Everyday for six weeks??? Does the school know there is a scheduling conflict for him with the hunter's class and with the family? Any wiggle room for you on missing a class here or there?

Down in Texas we pronounce that word "kale" as in, "Ahm gunna kale all y'all, sugars!" Everybody's a sugar, regardless of how sweet they are. But upside down? Isn't that fanny first? I was breech birth and I'm here to tell ya, that was no fun a'tall!
Up here in the hills of Arkansas it's "y'all" as in I'm gonna kill all a y'all"
I am irritated at the school. I got a message from Evan's teacher that they want him to go to an after school math class for 6 weeks, starting Monday.

Now, the reason this irritates me is because Evan has an A- in math. They are basing the need for this extra help on his MAP test scores, which is that test all the schools use now, you know, teach for the test. Well, my understanding of those tests is that each time they take them, the questions a student gets are based on the last round of scores. So in some cases, the questions are about things they haven't even covered in class yet. (This has happened to him before)

We just don't think he needs it. And there are other things going on that would be difficult to work around, like him being responsible for getting his brother and sister home in the afternoons, especially since I have little RJ here at least 3 afternoons a week...I still have no vehicle and will not drag the baby out in this cold. Evan is already signed up and paid up for hunter safety classes, they start later this month and would overlap. But the biggest reason is because he is an A student.

I don't know. Maybe I'm overreacting. Obviously we want him to succeed, but I would hardly count an A- a failure.
It's the same thing here Cat. The state mandated tests, called "TLI" tests, dictate the funding the school gets per student based on performance. They will recommend kids get tutoring in subjects they have A's or B's in based on scores in the same subjects on the TLI tests. My son had a 96% in math last year but based on his performance on the math portion of the TLI test they recommended he be put in a tutoring program. I politely declined. I think they have to pass on the recommendation from the state so they get their money. Not sure if exactly the same where you are, but sounds familiar. Have a good weekend.

I have not spoken to his teacher about it yet. Was planning on calling her later today. It's not a mandatory thing, and we've discussed it, so I think we're going to say no. I could understand it too, if his grades were slipping drastically. But he is an all around great student. He was really upset when I talked with him about it and told me most of the questions were at a 9th grade level. I don't know where he got that, but that is definitely something I'm going to ask the teacher about. If that is the case, then why the fuss? He is in 6th grade. I think he would take it as a punishment, and his attitude would change, and not for the better.

I have had teachers go over these test results with me several times and usually when there is a dip in scores, they tell me not to worry about it, the tests self-adjust and he has always been above benchmark, usually well above, even with a dip. I also wonder if his teacher is really the best judge of his scores, as she is fighting a serious illness and is out of class more often than in. And I don't mean for that to sound callous, she is a very nice lady and I wish her the best. But she hasn't been with Evan much so I just wonder.

You aren't overreacting, that is ridiculous. They can't make you do it.

My daughter brought home a D in math.....I haven't heard a word from her teacher....no note expressing concern, nothing.
They didn't offer her after school tutoring, because her test scores were off the chart.
Something is wrong when a kid who does poorly in class can't get extra help, and one who does very well is expected to stay after school. (((TINA)))

That is the system. It's all about the state tests. Your daughter scores were off the charts. That equals bonus and more $ for the school. That is all they see. Why help her with classwork. A real sore spot for me concerning the present school system.

Cat, I've taught almost 27 years in Kentucky, and I would politely decline the tutoring for your son.
Anyone that teaches knows that a kid with an A- in math is doing well, and should require no extra help. Just tell them you plan to watch his progress and will hire a private tutor if you deem he needs one.

I spoke to Evan's teacher and it turns out she made a mistake in recommending this extra class for Evan. I told her Scott and I had discussed it but did not feel his grades warranted him staying after school. She said she didn't have his information in front of her and I said I do...and read off what she had put on his report card in the comment section for math testing. She was really taken aback and she said she must have made a mistake in reading the lines on her master result chart. She apologized several times and I said it was ok that I was glad it was a mistake.

Then we spent a little time just talking about the mechanics of the test and how it worked, just to make sure I understood correctly about not every student necessarily taking the same test because it adjusts to past scores. She said yes, and not only that but it also adjusts while they're taking the test, if they continually get answers right, the questions keep getting more difficult (which often results in material they haven't covered yet and if they get a few in a row wrong, the test will take them down yet another path, with easier questions. So what Evan had on his test was not necessarily anything like what the kid next to him had on his test.

All is well though, she was embarrassed and apologetic about making the mistake and said Evan is doing very well. :)

Just remembered why religion is a personal thing for me.
Not sure if these comments answer the question WWJD?, but religious people have a way of turning the very people off that they're trying to "save."
The mods, I think, are just trying to promote a little tolerance by asking you to do your preaching in the Religion forums.
They didn't ban you from the site at all...just doing their jobs.
I understand that, but it doesn't really change much. If you're really wondering WWJD, He died for His faith, against all opposition. But I appreciate your comment about what religious people do, it's very true and I know I personally need the input from unbelievers all the time. Because it doesn't matter what I thought I said, it only matters what people hear. I also understand that I'm not being banned, only limited. I'm sure you can see the problem of only doing something in a place where only people that believe in the topic will hear it. It's like doctors talking about preventable and communicable diseases to each other, and not telling the populace. People that don't learn about it die. Even in that, you have people that have heard about how disease is contracted, and they do it anyway. That's just the nature of people but some do change their habits and avoid the pain and early death. Religion is a personal thing, absolutely. But if you experience the most amazing thing in your life personally, don't you want to share that with others? If it saves your life, don't you want to tell everyone? No one wants to hear, you can't smoke, or do drugs or eat bacon or have unprotected sex or don't feed the bears, but don't they still need to be warned of the dangers?

The point was that Stephen's site is not the place for it--it is not a pulpit for people to share their ministry or to be missionaries to "save" anyone, but you do have the Religion thread to discuss your thoughts about religion--all religions.

Yes. I was just answering her thoughtful post. I don't know how you can do it, but if people could answer this thread of conversation in King JV that would be wonderful.

If I had @danie's permission (and yours) I could move the two posts into the King JV thread, but in saying this, I wouldn't want Danie to feel pressure to have to respond.

Thanks, Flake, I'd rather you not move it if that's okay.

What if the most amazing thing in my life personally is that I like to shoot up heroin? Or have crazy, illicit sex with lots of people? Or talk constantly about myself?
Just because I think it's great doesn't mean SKMBers want to hear it UNLESS it's in a forum where, when they click on it, they know they're going to hear about it.
