Sorry to hear about this Staro! A couple of weeks ago I asked my doctor about the vaccine and was told that most insurance companies won't cover it unless the patient is over 60 years old and it is an expensive shot (around $300). I wish you a quick recovery.

In Ontario the province covers it after about age 65. Under that age it's about $250 I think. Some private insurance policies cover it. Ours does not.

Awful hearing how some of you have suffered..i had a very mild case,in the classic spot on the hip area, and the blisters and flaking were not fun,but not a really big deal for me..I wonder, because when I had chicken pox as a kid,if it relates at all to how you handled that as a kid..my chicken pox didn't bother me much..my poor sister, she was in such awful pain on getting shingles she had to go to the emergency room, and she is tough..god bless you all that have suffered with it or are suffering,I hope you feel better soon!!

I had it on my chest. The rash came after I had felt pain for a week. I had waited a little over a week before seeing the doc......I went the day after I thought I was having a heart attack.....they gave me a super heavy dosage of anti viral meds, and Lyrica for pain.
It took about three weeks to even feel like I could breathe without pain.
The rash came a week after feeling the pain as well. I thought it was my heart as well.....or lung cancer. It is very painful. I always thought it was an illness of the aged....I found out different lol.

I caught chicken pox when I was 30. It was horrific.

For what it is worth, here is a picture:

As far as an illness "of the aged" you are more prone to get this after age 50 :eek-new:

It might not be scientifically proven but, from personal experience, give that Capsaican cream a shot - just be careful with it as it can feel like a bit of a burning sensation on your skin

Bladder cancer was an older men's cancer as well. I was very young to get it. When I visit the hospital for my scope, I am in the waiting with a bunch of folks with walkers. The first time for surgery, the docs were surprised as they thought I would be older. lol. Leave it to me!

I waited a week before going to the doc. I am on anti-viral pills and pain meds. He is hoping that it will slow it down and keep it from spreading to other muscles. Lying down to sleep is like trying to get comfortable in an iron maiden.
They have lots of meds to help with the discomfort. I know a few people who have had it...will be a nuisance for a bit then it will be over and done. Just take extra good care of yourself.

I guess there are vaccines to keep you from getting it (anyone who has had chicken pox has the virus that causes it dormant in their system) but I will just leave my body alone I think!!

i had to look it up..... Shingles is Bältros in swedish. You have my biggest sympathies, Staro. Get well soon. If i remember correctly it can take a few weeks up to a month to get well..... But with all the get well wishes from SKMB it will be a lot quicker i am sure!!

I just have to say (not sure how bad Staros is) that it is more than "a nuisance for a bit" - it was damn painful and on top of that you can get something called "Post herpetic neuralgia" which can last for months to years.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that she can get over it quickly and build her immune system back up again :cheerful:

As far as the vaccine, I am not getting it either - hoping that having it that one time was enough for me. If they offer it later (say when I am in my 60s), then I may get one :encouragement:

Staro- I don't know why I can't post in your 'The Day The Music Died' thread? But I would love to come up there. Heard that there's a two-year waiting time though. The US will probably be wiped off the face of the Earth by then.......

Not positive, but think the thread is closed. Not seeing the lock symbol, but has the insufficient privileges message at bottom of page.

The pain is almost as bad as when I was getting chemo. I am on antiviral meds. Anyone else ever had it?
I had a contained rash of this virus on my lower back when I was sixteen. My doctor said it was due to stress and traumatic change in my life. It was very painful and very difficult to treat. Even sweating was painful. I empathize with you; I hope it doesn't last long, Staro.
