Actually impressed my younger daughter. Not sure why she was looking but about a year or so ago she asked me if I knew how many places my name turned up. Finally Mom is a "somebody" in her eyes. ;-D
I had that experience with DD#1 when her friend bought one of my books (at a thrift store, but still a public place--lol) without knowing it was mine and liked it. She was all agog: "Hey! That's my mom!" HAHAHAHA!

I watched A Good Marriage last night. I liked it, it was well-acted, well-written, and had great production values. But, it did what many sK adaptions do, made me want to reread sK's version since I assume, so far safely, that I prefer the original. There often seems to be something missing from the original, not something impossible to include due to screenwriting-related restraints. I respect the daunting challenges facing the screenwriter, but I think some aspects of a story are more than essential, and that too often they are unaccountably omitted.

It's been a long enough while since I've read A Good Marriage that I should afford to read it again in order to compare versions to see exactly what I'm missing in the movie. I suspect that then I'll decide that the movie's more comfortable to me than on first viewing, as I'll have identified what's missing.
Didn't SK write the screenplay (or was at least involved)? I thought I read that somewhere...

Arlington Road - Jeff Bridges, Tim Robbins, Joan Cusack

Not too bad - but then again not the greatest either. I thought Cusack gave a pretty good performance overall but the movie did not really grab me.

I thought it was well done but horrible in its final message. I never want to see it again. I don't think I want human beings to see it again. The slaughter of innocents and the triumph of evil. Yeah, baby.

I might be overstating. But I don't think so.

Someone mentioned LA Confidential? One of my very favorite movies of all time. Twisted plots that come together, stellar acting, wonderful period piece. About as seamless and riveting as they come. You can't even put the pieces together in the first viewing, and then comes the second and third, and you're going, "Ahhh, yes... now I see."

Anyway.....

Space Cowboys, a '90s movie about getting old-fart Right Stuff guys together for a space mission. We'd never seen it, and we got pretty well sucked in after 15 minutes. It was enjoyable popcorn, but the end left me shaking my head. I was so liking it until my Willing Suspension of Disbelief got suspended. Glad I saw it once - don't plan on watching it again.

Don't let the cover fool you. The Day of The Wacko might have been the best, most thoughtful and brilliant movie I've ever watched. It's a polish film so, yeah, don't expect hollywood corporate light content. This is the real deal, people.

I concur on all of the above points.

I also got it... ;;D I was making a different joke!
Green... save the planet... drive a hybrid.
*sigh* oh never mind.

:D
That aspect of Mod did not occur to me when I posted the inquiry (I was indeed responding to the idea that she is jaded). Depending on her recycling habits, I might be greener than she, however, I think she might be a composter, which I am not. My dad tried to get me into composting, but it requires an effective way of getting certain items to certain places in certain restricted amounts of time, plus very routine maintenance of a pile. My feeling is that piles should be scraped up and thrown out, not encouraged. The truth is that I think I'm too lazy to be as good a recycler as I could be.

Don't think I could qualify for tree-hugger status just yet as I don't do as well with recycling as I might and we don't compost our food scraps in the winter. They do make indoor composters but I've never been that dedicated. I guess it could be said that I've become a little jaded about the recognitions, though. There have been several times when someone has mentioned it here and I wasn't even aware of having received an acknowledgment.

I watched Big Driver last night. For a made-for-television movie I thought it was nicely done and the scenes of Tess being defiled were done well- they weren't too graphic (I don't like watching a woman be raped or being physically over-powered). Maria Bello did a wonderful job. Something worth watching again. I would have done exactly what she did. Joan Jett was surprisingly good in her role- I wasn't expecting too much from her but she really made you like her character. I liked the ending, too (the phone call!).

I thought it was extremely well done. I also agree that the defile scenes were handled very tastefully while getting the point across.
