I've always wondered about this -- what is the deal when an Ellen uses a YouTube clip? Do you get money from it, or is the value in allowing the use of your content derived from the exposure and subsequent enhancement of video views, and thus the potential for bigger advertising revenue? If you had been chosen, would you be allowed to use a phrase like "As seen on Ellen," or is that considered proprietary?
Also, in terms of your YouTube business, what constitutes a view? If someone watches half of a video, is that a view? I've often thought about videos that are an hour long...those of that type that have thousands of views make me think that maybe a view is defined in a specific manner. And if someone skips an ad, do you still receive credit for that? How many click-through events do you get on your videos? Can a YouTube video producer accept outside money to place an ad inside the video, or to review a product? Can videos be used to sell the users own products, like a self-published book?
The YouTube ad model is fascinating because I just don't know how many people actually watch and engage the ads. How valuable can the ad model be if the vast majority do not engage? It makes me wonder if YouTube should someday charge for access to its site, or if it should diversify its revenue stream by producing content (i.e., movies, TV shows, etc., like Netflix and Amazon).
