I used to belong to a website where people would create CDs of music and exchange them with each other. It was a huge amount of fun for a couple of reasons. Obviously receiving new music to listen to was always awesome!

But some of the most fun was putting the CDs together. Instead of just saying, "Fill a CD with music and send it to so-and-so, you'd get a list of descriptions and you'd have to find a song in your collection to fit them. (Usually there were 20 or more to pick from, and you only had to use 15 so it's not as hard as it sounds.)

The descriptions would be like these...

A song that starts with a G
A song from your favorite movie
A song that reminds you of a special person
An instrumental
A song for driving off a cliff in the rain
A song that don't want your friends to know you like
A song with the word "boy" in the title
A cover song
A song from a band where half or more of the members are dead
A song you love to sing out loud in the car
A song that makes you want to dance
A song that makes you cry
A song both you and your dad love
A song with more than 5 words in the title

And so on.

I always pay for my digital music, and if after listening to each new CD there were songs I wanted to keep in my collection, I would buy my own copy. I'm pretty anal that way.

Eventually the site stopped the CD exchanges because they were concerned about liability, and if they would get in trouble. People argued that it's always been okay to send mixtapes to people, and that each artist gets more exposure that way. To be honest, I don't really understand the legality of it.

I know the since then, iTunes has changed the way they license music purchased there, so that you are allowed to make more copies of each song to share. And, like I said, I'm pretty anal about owning music. I don't download stuff illegally. Other than that, it's all Greek to me.

Does anyone know of any sites that still do this?

Ok, start off by saying I read the title of this thread too fast, got a bit excited when I saw "x" followed by tape swap.

Anyway, technically, mix tape swapping was a breach of copyright laws. You are "legally prohibited" from public playing, lending, and reproducing music to sell. You are allowed to make as many copies as you like of any music you have paid for, so long as it is for your use only. In reality, there isnot a court in the land who would find a person guilty of breaching copyright law by sending a friend a mix tape, but a website that allows it....might be a different story.

I know it's not what this thread is about, but I can't help myself writing a playlist from your guidelines :)

A song that starts with a G
Girl, you'll be a woman soon - urge overkill
A song from your favorite movie
Earth Angel - the penguins/platters (back to the future)
A song that reminds you of a special person
Hurt - johnny cash (my dad)
An instrumental
Marooned - pink Floyd
A song for driving off a cliff in the rain
Love reign over me - the who (only because of the image from quadrophenia)
A song that don't want your friends to know you like
Spies - coldplay (it may be one of their only good songs, but it's still coldplay. Not cool!
A song with the word "boy" in the title
About a boy - badly drawn boy
A cover song
Dream on - Ronnie James dio/yngwie malmsteen (original, aerosmith)
A song from a band where half or more of the members are dead
I want you (she's so heavy) - the Beatles
A song you love to sing out loud in the car
A horse with no name - America
A song that makes you want to dance
Sex on fire - kings of Leon
A song that makes you cry
I wanna know what love is - foreigner (it doesn't, but it's the closest one to)
A song both you and your dad love
Smells like teen spirit - nirvana (he was in his 60s when I was listening to this)
A song with more than 5 words in the title
If you tolerate this your children will be next - manic street preachers

Hey Jen!

I love the idea but I'm kinda techno stoopid.

If you don't mind, can I post the songs I would send to you according to your criteria?

(It may take awhile but I'd like to try.)

>>hugs<<

Peace.

I would love that, Sigmund!

And please don't call yourself stoopid. There are many "S" words that describe you, but that's not one of them: sweet, smart, sassy, strong, Sigmundfreudish, and silly. And that list only took about 5 seconds to come up with, if you want I bet there are a zillion more!

I love this playlist! And thank you for the answers to my legal question, too. :)

Hurt makes me cry, especially the video.

Girl, I thought about this all day long. Now I'm thinking of other prompts. I needed to do something fun with my brain for while.
