The National Press Club also does an annual book event in DC. It mostly consists of historians, journalists and academic types but occasionally some random celebrity shows up which makes a bizarre contrast. My favorite was when Don Knotts was there sitting in the midst of all these political wonks. He probably could have drawn a mob in some other context but there was almost no one at his table. I felt a little sheepish but his was the only book that I bought amidst all that high end literature. I remember the person ringing it up at the cash register giving it a disdainful look.

Aw! I would have loved to see Don Knotts. And would have given stink-eye back to the cash register person!:amazed:

I've attended the National Book Festival four times, including last year when it was at the Washington Convention Center for the first time. It will take place September 24, 2016. For more info, see the following link: 2016 Book Festival | National Book Festival - Library of Congress
The event is free to attend, and they post the author lectures and signing schedules well ahead of time. If Stephen King is giving a talk, then doing a signing on the same day, you will have to pick one or the other. They do a good job of organizing the autograph line. No tickets, but they organize the line and cut it off by headcount. After a certain amount of people get in the line, that's it. Great event with two down sides: 1) For popular authors they always run out of books to purchase, or may only offer a paperback version when you wish to purchase a hardcover copy. 2) You never know what the author is willing to sign or not sign until you get in front of them. Some do not sign ARCs, proofs, posters, or previous works they have published. Last year Buzz Aldrin would only sign his new book on Mars - all other books he had written (including my two) were turned away. Great event!

Based on the crowds and demand for tickets to King's upcoming book tour, I think this is going to have to be a ticketed event unless they want chaos and an angry mob.
