HELENA, Ala. (AP) — The Latest on a pipeline explosion in Alabama (all times local):

6 p.m.

Colonial Pipeline says in a statement that it has shut down its main pipeline in Alabama after an explosion in a rural part of the state outside Birmingham.

The Georgia-based company said in the brief statement Monday evening that its top priorities are the health and safety of its work crews at the scene and protecting the public.

Authorities say at least seven workers have been injured in the explosion on the gas pipeline.

Gov. Robert Bentley said the explosion happened about a mile west of the spot where the pipeline burst last month. That rupture led to gasoline shortages across the South.

The company’s statement did not address how Monday’s explosion might affect the availability of gasoline and said more information would be released as it becomes available.

Authorities say at least seven workers have been injured in an explosion on the Colonial Pipeline that sent flames soaring over the forest in a rural part of Alabama.

Gov. Robert Bentley says in a statement that the explosion happened Monday on the Colonial gas pipeline, about a mile west of the spot where it burst last month. That rupture led to gasoline shortages across the South.

Video from area media shows a huge plume of flame and smoke rising in a wooded area in Shelby County southwest of Birmingham.

Bentley told WBRC-TV in a live interview Monday evening that the seven injured workers were taken to Birmingham hospitals by helicopter and ambulance.

4:45 p.m.

At least five people are reported injured after what’s being described as an explosion in rural Alabama.

Details are sketchy, but video from area media shows a huge plume of flame and smoke rising in what appears to be a wooded area in Shelby County southwest of Birmingham. It’s unclear what exploded, but gas lines run through the area.

Helena police say they’re assisting Shelby County authorities with a pipeline fire.

Several fire departments are sending crews to assist, and media reports say at least five people were hurt and headed to a hospital.

Please be safe!!! If the authorities say to leave, please leave. About 10 years ago there was a major pipeline explosion in Bellingham, WA where a few people were killed and others injured. It was bad. There is a small gas pipeline behind my house on the side where my bedroom is and sometimes I wonder about that happening right in my backyard. One just never knows....

Lord, looks like a nuclear bomb went off.
Yeah, it does. This is the parking lot of our Books-A-Million. That's Taco Bell on the horizon. The news broke around 3pm but no more information has been released. I think everyone is safe in my area and I hope those nearer the explosion are following all safety precautions and orders of leaders. Will watch news tonight to get updated.

Doc- I saw more on the news tonight and it is definitely one scary situation!! My goodness!! Please stay safe and keep us posted. Looks like this might affect the gas prices around the country.....
Thanks for the good will and concern, Dan, I appreciate it. Basically the lines have been cut off (valves?) to surrounding areas and neighborhoods. Officials are saying that they are giving it a few days to burn out/dissipate before moving closer to fix problem. It is my understanding that there are no safety concerns for those who live nearby other than air quality. From what I'm hearing on our news stations everything is contained and they are just dealing with injuries/aftermath. Gas prices should only increase by a few cents in our area. Others may pay a little more but no one is panicking at the moment. Hopefully this sort of tragedy doesn't happen again.

i wonder if this is going to lead to another shortage issue in the south. i was luckily out of town during the last gas crisis a few weeks ago. the pipelines in alabama are sure having a lot of problems right now, and hopefully they can get them under control for everyone's sake
