Also, I think people view it more "fun" when it's a group helping, vs. them doing it on their own independently....
Also - it seems sometimes that people are like sheep or lemmings - just following the crowd so to speak, rather than thinking for themselves. I don't mean this in a negative way - it is just something I have observed over the years.

Edit: my goodness, I do sound rather cynical today! :icon_eek::friendly_wink:

People individually can be caring, generous, and thoughtful. People in groups are big, dumb animals who tend to follow the loudest, most self-assured voice. Sometimes that's good and sometimes that's bad. Depends on the loud voice.

Do you think submitting a "write in" vote for an election is a wasted vote?

It depends on how worthless or scary the other candidates are.

There are many times I feel like I'm choosing the lesser of 2 evils, and, I really feel guilty voting for either candidate. I used to think that writing in a vote for a candidate I support or feel would be good for the position was a good civic minded and responsible thing to do, but, my husband says I may as well not vote because I'm throwing my vote away.

Unless there's a concerted effort by groups to band together to write in a single candidate, he's pretty much right. I'm much the same as you: voting is sometimes a matter of holding my nose and picking the one whose positions dislike the least, or who has the most points I agree with. I can't remember feeling totally simpatico with every position of any candidate, and that makes sense. Candidates (for national office, anyway) try to appeal to the widest pool of people.
