This weekend has been one of reflection and remembering all my loved ones I don't have anymore.

And I remembered, my grandfather, who I so wish would've written a story of his life, he was friggin' interesting! But he didn't have a high school education and wasn't good with words and punctuation, so he wouldn't write it down. Anyway, side bar there -- my grandfather lost my grandmother very young, she was 45 and had cervical cancer. She left him with 5 kids. Thankfully, most were old enough to start marrying off.

But, every time he went to my grandmother's grave, he left coins on her headstone. Money to pay the ferryman. Now, apparently my grandmother was on an installment plan. Not sure her boat fare got completely paid before my grandfather was no longer physically able to put those coins on there for her. Hopefully Charon didn't throw her out midstream to dog paddle her way to shore among the doomed souls.

Just a random story.
YOU write it down. Everything you know. I've been in your position before--wishing a story was written down--and I finally decided to write down what I know of my ancestors' pasts. It's better than nothing, right? I tell my kids the stories I know, as well, and they love them (particularly the scandalous ones :p I do not come from the 'behaving well' class of immigrants). A family history is a STORY, and we all love those.

Just the scandals? lol Let's see... great grandpa never married his second 'wife' (and my beloved great-grandma), and she never divorced her first (abusive) husband. She just ran, leaving a daughter behind. Their own kids, my great-uncles, don't know that one. My grandpa and his first wife were divorced in the '30s, which was almost unheard of. Grandma and grandpa got divorced (still a scandal in the 50s) and she moved in with his younger brother. Another non-marriage that the kids, my mom's half brothers and sisters, don't know about. My mom and her sisters speculate that their stepmother was a hooker in Reno who blackmailed my grandpa into marriage; they think he probably killed someone and the stepmother knew about it. He apparently had a horrible temper that was suddenly under strict control after his second marriage. My dad's dad was not his dad--his actual dad was a young Irish charmer who hit and ran (we found that out from my dad's military records--there was some discussion of his background when he needed top, top secret clearance, and it was touch nd go whether he would get it because of this).

That's the tip of the iceberg--lol. Weirder things happened further back. Prairie shootings, mail order brides, cowboys, participation in the actual Oklahoma Land Rush, a Christian pastor sneaking one kid out of Georgia (Rus) during the Revolution, Native American great, great, great grandma slammed into a mental institution when he existence became troublesome to her French son-in-law's business... so many stories. I love my big, crazy family :)

There is a benefit to having been a very quiet kid :) I heard all the dirt, because the adults forgot I was in the room.

Write what you know, and talk to other older family members about what they know. It's mad interesting!
Pretty much all my old relatives are gone. I AM the old relative. I have 2 aunts left. One has Alzheimer's and the other one i haven't seen in years and we just haven't been close because of geography. Maybe it's time to make her spill the beans.

Dana Jean -- contact that aunt now. I was doing family history after my mom passed. Contacted a long lost aunt to get info. She said she was going in for surgery and would write me, answering all my questions soon. The next letter I received was from her daughter saying my aunt had passed. Do not wait- ask. I have a zillion photos my mom put in albums and no idea who what when.

This is what Amal Clooney wore to meet the Pope. This is such a lovely get-up. She sorta reminds me of Jackie O. Lovely and graceful.
