Why was a person being treated for mental health issues (specifically PTSD) and has been physically violent/threatening allowed to have a gun? And why was he allowed to board a plain with both the gun and the bullets? Even if they were in a suitcase. Shouldn't they be required to be checked in specifically as guns and ammunition?
Transportation Security Administration rules allow travelers to pack unloaded firearms in checked luggage, so long as passengers declare their weapons to the airline while checking in, and they are packed in a locked, hard-sided container.

The strict protocols involve showing the weapon and its carrying case to an airline ticket agent, who then checks that the gun is unloaded. Ammunition may also be carried in checked baggage but must be stored separately from the gun, said David Williams, assistant professor of aerospace and occupational safety at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.

haven't tried to learn much about what happened, caught a snippet or two, glanced at an article or two. thought i heard that he had one checked bag, his gun and ammo. nothing else? can't imagine something like that not raising some alarm bells. but then...when we've flown, the people who go through our check-in baggage do so in front of everyone, small airport, and i don't imagine they know how many bags one person has. still...if all he had was the one item, and the airline knows it is a gun, that didn't raise alarm bells? and it seems like all kind of wrong for another to receive that bag...in a crowded airport. i don't believe anyone can just walk into an airport, concealed carry license or not.

....they were checked in as appropriate per TSA rules, best as I can deduce.....he took his bag and loaded the clip in a bathroom....

That's my understanding too.

And, from what I understand, the exact same rules would apply this side of the border. Probably less guns get transported, but some would. Hunter can and do bring their own guns when travelling.
