Good evening.

You know when I have too much time on my hands? When Siggy gets bored, she starts thinking (never a good thing). (First thing, Sigs starts talking about herself in the third person. Ha!) So... I was thinking.

You have central air and central heating. You set the thermostat at...let's say ...73 degrees.

It's summer and it's 99 degrees. Outside. Inside your home, you are walking around in a t-shirt, shorts, and are bare foot. You drink iced tea, chilled water, and iced soft drinks. You eat a ton of salads. Chicken salad, tuna salad ...salads. You eat light. You go to bed with just a top bed sheet.

Now it's winter. It's 30 degrees. Outside. Inside your home, you are walking around in flannel pajamas, sweats (sweat pants, sweat shirt) socks and slippers. You drink hot tea, hot coffee, hot chocolate. You eat soups, stews, and chili. Hearty foods. You go to bed under a blanket or comforter.

Why?

You set your thermostat at 73 degrees.

Why do you behave so differently?

:smile2:

This is one of the many, many, MANY, things that I wonder about.

Y'all stay cool. (Or warm.)

Peace.
Why? Because in winter it gets so dang cold here we have to bundle up and eat hot foods. I kind of like the change of seasons and the cooler weather.

I could do without the minus 40 with a wind chill however!

hypnic jerk, or sleep start.

Human ,thousand Years ago.
Not at the Top of the Food Chain.

They were surrounded by Pedators.
They slept on Trees.

The Twitch, was a Warning Signal (Wake up or fall of this Tree, brake a Leg and be an easy Prey)
Who's a hypnic jerk?

For us, we set the house to about 67 in the winter to conserve the heat bill and about 73 in the summer to conserve the air conditioning bill.... actually in Colorado, we're more inclined to just open the windows. But there are days, more than there used to be, where opening the windows doesn't help.

So we are actually colder in the winter and warmer in the summer.

I'm more inclined when I'm falling asleep to wake up to a shallow-sleep dream than a hypnic jerk, although that happens too. Seriously, I start dreaming when I'm not fully asleep.

I had to look this up - it's called hypnagogic sleep :icon_eek:

I think the psychological term is labelled 'conditioning'. Humans have patterns just like other animals like rabbits and bears that hibernate in winter but we don't but we do behaviors like you described. Also if you look out the window and it is snowing outside it feels stupid if you are inside eating an ice-cream and dressed in a swimming costume. I think it's the same as why most people can't sleep during the day and that most people's blood pressure and other things slow down at night in expectation of sleep.
