...this one was a true "stake" in my heart of hearts...I have been blessed through my life to have enjoyed a man very adept at his craft, no matter the role...I have to give an emotional vote to his portrayal of Saruman, because the LOTR meant so much to me over my formative years...his was a career that will never be equaled, and his legacy a stable of unforgettable characters...he summed up his own life beautifully.....
We don't always get the kind of work we want, but we always have a choice of whether to do it with good grace or not.

I've not heard that quote before, Scott. Thank you so much!

This is sad, sad news. I remember the movies I grew up watching as a young lad, the scary ones (at the time anyway!) that he made for Hammer studios. Even though he was a 'bad man' in the LOTR films, he still captured my heart when I watched them. He is going to be missed by many.

Aw, just saw this. A gentleman beyond reproach, an actor of consummate professionalism, all around badass villain--went toe-to-toe with a buncha heavies: Van Helsing, Sherlock Holmes, Captain America, Darth Vader, Gandalf, etc.

My fave Count Dracula. He brought a savagery and gruesomeness to the character that Lugosi's portrayal lacked. He will be missed.

But then again, I've seen this cat die HUNDREDS of times, so I wouldn't be surprised if...?

....I never took Lugosi seriously as a vampire....Frank Langella had his moments and Gary Oldman struck a creepy twist on it-but Sir Chris brought the Stoker undead to life, if you will....

Lugosi, to me, always looked like a shabby little bugger dressing up. I don't know why. Christopher Lee, by contrast, had the bearing (as well he might...). The best actor to play the role by a long way, IMO, though he did play it too long (and iirc he thought so too).

...he was the most believable as well....

I love Lugosi, who for me will always be Dracula as Connery will always be Bond, but, the Lugosi movie aside, Christopher Lee's Dracula is, for me, the most enjoyable.

...I think Lugosi was a an OK actor, but Plan 9 will always haunt his career...unfairly...he was much better at lampooning himself, or in more 'serious" roles.....
