....when I was a student nurse, we were granted the privilege of touring the cadaver lab at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.....it was fascinating from a pure anatomical standpoint to see human bodies in various stages of dissection, but then-there were the platforms where bodies that had been donated to the program lay peacefully in their shrouds, awaiting their turn with the soon to be physicians....each one had a large sign at the foot of their biers that gave their names, ages at death and what their occupations had been....part of the reasoning behind it was to allow the students to see how different jobs had altered the bodies inner physiology, but-and most importantly-according to the gentleman who ran the lab, was so that those that dealt with the bodies would never EVER forget that these had been real people with real lives and were to be accorded the respect of same....not to act like they were just inanimate lumps of study material....

A very important lesson IMO.

Before being born again and becoming a minister my father in law worked as a wrestler and a male nurse. (I once asked him if he had been a female wrestler....mother in law, who was also a minister, laughed hysterically....father in law however didn't realize I was joking and just answered that he had been a male wrestler.)

According to his attestation papers, my grandfather was also a male nurse prior to going overseas to fight in WWI.

I wonder if, when the term was "male nurse" they worked more like orderlies than nurses? My grandfather was 19 years and a few days when he joined the army. Couldn't have had much medical training. FIL was older, and he had a better understanding of medical care than many people...but that could have been learned as a patient.....as I said, he was also a wrestler.

...I would say he was probably an orderly, at that time I don't believe there was any training for males in nursing-such was still the gender regimented mind-set.....women were Nurses, men trained to be Doctors...unless they were medics in the Service and that was about as close to nursing they could get...

Huge fan of SK for over 20 years. I get pimply goosebumps when he releases a new book. Why do some of the 'fans' here waste our time, his time, or his publisher's time with post's which have nothing to do with his work? There is an infinite number of sites where you can post your ignorant ideas about god, social issues, or who won on last night's Bachelor. Please, let's not sully this forum with such nonesense.

Hi Tara,
Here's a photo of Johnny Depp to make you feel welcome :D
