Nothing to add, but this thread made me think of another story: I was reading a (used) copy of something by Kurt Vonnegut, an non fiction book. I was very hurt when I read a line about how he feels about people who borrow books. I wish I could remember it exactly. "People who borrow books are [ some insult here] . Just buy the book!", he said, angrily. Imagine if there were no libraries or used book stores?! If I had to pay full price for books, I wouldn't get to read anything other than my SK's that come in the mail at a nice price. :)

Wilmington DE, strange little place.
I really liked Finders keepers , I love the series , S.K. has made a WHOLE carrer of
putting together some strange posse's...the losers club , the 4(5) gunslingers
and these three guys...are some really off-beat, hodge podge, MIS MATCH
groups of heros!!!

Thats not to say he cant put together a like-minded crew...like the 4 boys
from The Body (stand by me) . they were all uummm...pretty normal kids.

the ending of Fnders keepers left me a little flat. it was predictable and ...
kindda flat , there was a second story line ..." in the works" but that never took off.
(im sure its for the next book)
I hope the group gets a forth (and maybe fifth) member next time ! one of the two girls(sisters)
the two
young men are both off to collage, so maybe there will be new
members (each of these boys has a sister)

The library is the obvious answer and yes, it forces you to wait, and if there's one thing people can't stand in this brave new world it's being out of the loop.

I don't know what the solution is, but I do know that if you're opening that book and turning every page, that book is not new anymore.

You may or may not have stolen it, but they can't sell it as new.

Not to me.

I read ENTIRE books for free and then put them back for sale.

What I did was thieft and I knew it, I just claimed poverty as an excuse.

This is absolutely NOT theft!

I was in a convenience store one time, and saw the newspaper headline. I picked up the paper and scanned the story, only to be told by the attendant that technically, I was committing theft. She would not believe me when I assured her I was not.

I was in FULL POLICE UNIFORM at the time. You can't fix stupid.

Oh, and if I'm buying the newest release, I'm getting one off the middle of the stack!

There's probably some kind of medical or psychological term for this, but I never take the first one of anything.

George Carlin used to do a great bit about opening up the new loaf of bread but reaching past the "heel" and the first couple of slices to get the "good" bread in the middle.

I never take the first of anything, or the last. I mean, it's got to be last for a reason...right? (Though if we're all the same, the last was probably the first originally.) ;)

I hate when yer chugging along on yer latest used book, turn a page, and BLAM, big old BLOODSTAIN--well, It could be chocolate milk, or wine, or something--all the same, I utilize extreme caution when touching such pages, and long ago gave up the habit of 'licking my fingers' in order to ease page flipping.

My illustrated fifty shades of grey copy was missing pages 45-60 , and don't get me started on the stain on the back page. I think some joker had glued the picture pages together too.

Public Libraries were invented for this very reason. My town is small and for twenty years I went to a city library in the next county. Of course not being a resident, there was a fee. When I started, it was $10 a year and I could read over 50 books a year. It is now $68 a year, but that might be for county residents, since last time I obtained a card as a non-county resident it was $138! I am now lucky if I can read a dozen books a year, so naturally I pursue other avenues for obtaining books. One of the best things is to get audiobooks through my local library's connection with the state library, but even then the selection could be better. As far as the food thing, my mom seems to find it impossible to read without eating and she has stained books. She does not like reading in libraries because she always gets hungry and food is not allowed!
