Time to stock up on wood and get one of those wood stoves, I guess! Back to the old days when you got exercise chopping the woodWe use propane for our heat, gas range, hot water, and dryer so it's making me a little nervous. Our propane rate hasn't gone up (knock on wood) the way some reports have mentioned but with the cold, we're going through a lot more than some years.

...with the cold, we're going through a lot more than some years.
Last year I actually rationed the heating. I never used to do that. And we have as many real fires as we can as we had a tree chopped down by our garage. Pensioners over here are frightened to put their heating on because they can't afford it. Really.
Hope none of the locals read the SKMB!!Been there, done that, converted to propane. We decided we were getting too old and lame for that kind of exercise. I've got 3-1/2 cords of nicely seasoned hardwood still stacked in the yard, though. Hmmm....on second thought, considering the title of this thread, pay no attention to those wood racks filled with firewood.
I wooden be surprised in this cold.Right here in NH.

Do you deliver?
Okay - I will settle for Steve's latest book, gift wrapped and signed (of course), delivered by his hunky son Joe. I will invite him in for tea and crumpets (he can even bring his GF if he has one!)Not firewood.
Jim Rennie and The Chef?I was listening to NPR this AM and they were talking about a propane/heating oil shortage and the prices having gone up dramatically this year.
(knock on wood)
I get you. It's been warmer here than usual (knock wood), but I have a firm "No higher than 68 degrees" rule, and that only happens when everyone is home. During the day, I don't turn it much higher than 65, and at night it goes down to 60. We have natural gas, but it's still a big expense in the winter.
Could be worse, though: I have a friend in Nashville who has electric heat. Due to the extreme, VERY unusual cold there, her electric bill is $575 this month. I would pass out if I got a bill that high--and she keeps her thermostat at 63 all the time!
You know, there is a special place in heaven for you. I have such a hard time watching any sort of animal neglect or abuse or special needs. I've taken care of many through my years and if a little creature presented itself to me, I wouldn't turn my back. But to be a haven for so many....my heart would be so broken all the time. It takes a special person to embrace the woes of little animals. Can relate to your friend in Nashville. With the Fl unusual duration of cold the electric bill has really cut into the budget. Home is all electric and I do keep the temps down as much as possible. 68 is the rule here too. Had to crank it up a tad on the really cold nights due to special need critters.
