Videos? They still make those?

MTV is more like MehTV these days.

I miss the days of Headbangers Ball, 120 Minutes and Liquid Television.

In protest of the void MTV has become, here are the SwiftDog Video Music Awards:

Best Rock Song of the 80's (lyrics are still very much on point in today's world)

Video that bests represents what new Van Halen should sound like

Best video from the 2000's that no one ever saw (I've partied with these guys. Very cool and chill people!)

Cult of Personality is in my top songs ever :) Sucks that Vernon Reid doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a damned good guitarist.

Burnin' Vernon gets his props in musicians circles \w/

Listen to this isolated guitar track from Cult of Personality . It's SICK. I've been trying to correctly play the verse fill and bridge to this tune for 27 years and I still can't get it!!!

Thank goodness he does! Wish popular admiration was as large, because he's amazing. I remember seeing them early on, and hearing them, him in particular, was like... electricity. I couldn't get the grin off my face, and my heart was pounding! It's frickin' magic, watching or hearing someone do something so well that it seems supernatural. Gets me every time. So many seriously slammin' guitarists get little notice, while kudos are heaped on just a few, based on name recognition.

Sorry to go on and on. Nothing gets me as wound up as good music, except maybe a fine book or a first class movie...nah. Music first. :)

I didn't watch the show. I couldn't pick Kanye West out of a lineup, and I don't know a Miley Cyrus song from any other pop performance.

But I'll say that in a world where show after show is made of people famous apparently for lack of any talent, where a serial and inveterate boor can jump in the Presidential race and lead, where a former symbol of American virility cross-dresses, keeps the genitals, and gets fame and fortune and a new public gender identity for it, that someone like Ms. Cyrus who simply sings and gets photographed sans clothing from time to time run the risk of being boring.

As a lifelong, passionate music lover, here are my thoughts on Miley Cyrus (whether you all want them or not):

Miley Cyrus is a reflection of the Millennial generation to which she belongs. It's a generation defined by "empowered" 20-somethings who don't really work hard or think much about what they want. They feel they deserve notoriety, fame, a good job, nice clothes, etc. And Miley appeals to this generation.

As compared to Madonna or even Lady Gaga, well, there is no comparison. I say this purely because that is how I see it, not because I am a huge fan of either of these women. Madonna, while having a bit of talent, had a lot of balls and common sense "back in the day." She also understood the meaning of hard work (and still does). Lady Gaga, on the on the other hand, speaks to the outcasts in society, having felt she was one all her life. She is well educated and looks to the past to create her music and reinvent herself. She knows about music and art and that is why someone like Tony Bennett is willing to work with her; because she has credentials.

Miley Cyrus, while possessing a decent voice, is constantly looking around her to see what is "hip" and jumping on whatever bandwagon comes her way. She wants to "shock" but grasps at straws to do so; there is no intelligence behind her actions. Her new "indie" album was produced by Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips. This is supposed to give her cred now. We'll see.

If I was Miley's manager/PR people I would have told her that she would have received way more publicity if she had hosted the VMA's wearing some classy dresses that covered virtually everything up, maybe showing some cleavage, ala the green dress J.Lo wore years ago, etc. We've already seen pretty much eveything she's got (or doesn't have) and now it's time for her to get rid of her 'trashy-I'm-a-meth-head' look. Keep the tongue in your mouth, Miley, we all know where it's been........Getting the crowd to scream out 'Marijuana' is not shocking- it's been done way back in the 70's, it's nothing new. George Clinton of the infamous Parliment group smoked it on stage all the time- that's nothing new either. I'm hoping that she'll just disappear soon, like in the next two years. Music careers generally last about 7 years for those without any real talent and she's into hers (her 'adult' one anyway) now for about 4.......

You should check out their (Berlin) song 'Sex, I'm a....' and 'No More Words'. The lead singer Teri something is now an actress. On their first album she was credited as 'Vocals. BJ's.' At least they had a sense of humor back then....

I love the group Berlin. Their first album was called Pleasure Victim. The lead singer's name is Terri Nunn and she was an actress even before being in Berlin. She's one of the two teens who Try to win KISS tickets in the movie Thank God It's Friday.

Do you guys remember the group Missing Persons? The singer (Dale Bozzio?) wore Lady Gaga outfits before Gaga even thought about what to wear! ;-D Dale wore some really far-out outfits.

I absolutely remember the group and her (I still listen to them!). And that's what I mean about Gaga looking to the past. I am positive she has knowingly channeled Ms. Bozzio in some of her outfits.
