I get them a lot. Unsettling feelings of recognition. Makes me wonder if, perhaps, I might be wrong about where I've been and where I'm going.

Girl named Mary Ann. I've told this story before, but she was a very serious, very studious girl -- ended up as salutatorian of our class -- whom I admired a great deal. She had no idea I was even alive. High School. I'm pretty sure it wasn't really the way I remember it.

I'm generally not much for olives, but I prefer the green ones ... unless it's on a pizza ... then I want the black ones.
8. Have you ever won a contest?
Halloween dance when I'm in eighth grade. They had all these games of skill set up. Popping balloons with darts. Shuffleboard. Beer Pong ... well ... maybe not Beer Pong, but stuff like that. Somehow I managed to score more points, collectively, at these than anybody else, and there was a prize for this. The funny thing was there was also a door prize, and my ticket got pulled for that, too. They decided not to give me two prizes, which I didn't think was fair, as one prize was for games of skill and the other a matter of mere chance, but I was not heavily down with fighting the power when I was barely 13.
And get this: The prizes were record albums. The one I won was Cheech & Chong's Big Bambu. Can you dig it? Some teacher went out and bought a Cheech & Chong album as a prize for a middle school kid. I'll say it again: People are funny.
