Then I would roll back to my beach house for the end of the world.

1. What silly things were your afraid of - as a child?

The Hole.

When I was little, my dad put an exhaust fan in the kitchen and -- to run the vent outside -- had to cut a hole in the wall in our bedroom to get to the eaves. He framed off the opening and put a little door on there, and we put one of the dressers in front of it. But I was always aware that it was there. There was a similar door in the girls' room across the hall, on the other side of the house, but that was access to the "attic" and had always been there. I did not think of it the same way. Whatever it was I might fear ... the boogeyman ... the Earl King ... Knackles ... I always figured that when it came for me, it would come through that hole in the wall behind the dresser.

2. What was your favorite toy as a kid?

An inflatable clown -- Bozo, in fact -- that was bottom-heavy with sand and would pop back up every time you knocked it down. Hours of fun. I had a favorite teddy bear, too ... but did not really consider him a toy.

3. What was your first car?

It was a ratty old 1962 Mercury Comet that my father had fixed up and gave to me when I turned 16, ostensibly to piss off my mother. I remember this car primarily because my dad had originally paid the princely sum of $25 for it. I remember that because when I was 12 years old (in 1973) I asked for a new baseball glove; a first basemen's mitt. I had become a pretty fair ballplayer by then and was expected to compete for the all-star squad. This was the kind of thing my father could understand, so he took me to the sporting goods store and he bought me a pretty good Rawlings for $26 (plus tax). "Take care of that mitt, Pal," he said to me. "It cost me more than my car."

4. Do you have a knickname - that only special people call you? Tell.

There was a girl who used to call me "Bear," for reasons that will not be explained. She doesn't do that anymore.

5. What is the best thing that you cook?

I can get pretty creative with lasagna when the mood strikes me.

6. What was your longest road trip?

When I live on the Florida Panhandle, my wife and I would drive from Penasacola to Boston at least once a year. One time we happened to be stopping around Roanoake, VA in conjunction with one of those Civil War re-enactments that happen occasionally around the south, and we had to do some pretty fancy shucking-and-jiving to find a hotel room.

7. What would you do for an Klondike Bar?

I'll kill Rooster for it ... and I'll kill any one of you who shows yeller again.

Seriously, though ... depending upon who was offering it, I might do just about anything.

8. What is your dream job?

Telling stories. I am a lucky, lucky man.

9. What was your worst cooking disaster?

Don't make potato chips on an electric stove. That's all I'm gonna say.

10. When was the last time you embarrassed yourself in public?

I don't know that it's particularly embarrassing, but I talk to myself audibly quite often and -- worse than that -- when I see goofy stuff happening around me I will laugh right out loud, even when no one is with me. I would imagine a lot of people who encounter me peripherally probably think I'm pretty crazy.

I'm not sure they're wrong.

1. What silly things were your afraid of - as a child?

Quicksand

I am extremely claustrophobic. I had this recurring dream when I was a boy of being trapped in a phone booth (remember those?) that was slowly sinking in quicksand. I was terrified of quicksand. What kid wouldn't be? Of course, as 80s points out, I had little to fear from quicksand in suburban Massachusetts.
There were these mudflats, though, out by the sand and gravel pits at one end of a lake in our neighborhood where a kid could get in some pretty serious trouble if he was not careful.

Sometimes I wonder about kids ... and parents.

Parents are always sending their kids out with admonishments to "be careful," knowing in their secret hearts that they probably won't. Just as kids are always advising their parents, "Don't worry," knowing all the while that they will.

Funny old world.

1. What silly things were your afraid of - as a child?
The Man With a Hammer. Psycho killer in the closet. And I dreamed about him on and off for YEARS. I actually quit a job once because one of the guys that worked there smiled EXACTLY like TMWaH. Too risky to stay there, I thought.

2. What was your favorite toy as a kid?
Mrs. Beasley and Baby Beans, if I had to pick a toy. I really liked books best, though.

3. What was your first car?
Nissan 200SX. Sounds sporty, but it wasn't--lol

4. Do you have a knick name - that only special people call you? Tell.
Not now, unless you count 'Mom'. Oh, my mom still calls me 'Missy Mouse' sometimes :)

5. What is the best thing that you cook?
Hard to choose. Homemade mac and cheese, maybe? I cook lots of things (and I think pretty well!), but my kids love that and say there's nothing like it.

6. What was your longest road trip?
When I was a kid, from our house in San Antonio to my grandma's house in WY. As an adult, from here to my husband's family's houses in MI.

7. What would you do for an Klondike Bar?
I don't know that I've ever had one. Is it an ice cream bar?

8. What is your dream job?
Reading and writing, then librarian or bookstore owner :) It would be really nice to be able to make a good living from it.

9. What was your worst cooking disaster?
Homemade pozole. Cooked all day, smelled incredible...and I dropped the pot as I was taking it to the table :( I incinerated some cookies while watching Super Bowl playoffs once. Stupid Redskins.

10. When was the last time you embarrassed yourself in public?
I do it so often that it rarely makes a dent in my memories anymore. My mouth takes off without permission from my brain a lot.

1. What silly things were your afraid of - as a child? I saw "Halloween" at the drive in when it came out in 1978. After that, I saw Michael Myers with that insanely frightening mask around every corner and in every dark corner for months..lol. My mom was pissed at my dad for years for taking me to see that.

2. What was your favorite toy as a kid? My Transformers action figures. Wish I would have saved them, some of the ones I had are worth big money now.

3. What was your first car? A 1979 Mustang LX. My friends and I called it the "Black Dragon". It didn't earn that title because it was nice, when you turned on the heater, greenish smoke came out of the vents. The smoke smelled very strongly of antifreeze. Never figured it out, but you wanted to crack the windows no matter how cold it was.

4. Do you have a knick name - that only special people call you? Tell. Not really. My ex-coworkers called me ghost.

5. What is the best thing that you cook? I literally suck at cooking anything. Just not my thing.

6. What was your longest road trip? Back in 2003 my wife and I spent almost three weeks on vacation. We drove up to South Dakota, then westward across Wyoming, then south back down thru Colorado to Estes Park. It was a long trip but the best vacation we ever had. I forgot how many miles it was round trip but quite a few.

7. What would you do for an Klondike Bar? Kate Beckinsale....wait a minute...did you ask "who" you would do or "what" you would do?:) I don't much like Klondike Bars...

8. What is your dream job? I'd like to open a gun store if I was independently wealthy and didn't have to worry about the store actually turning a huge profit. When I'm in my local gun store, I tend to camp out for an hour or so just talking with the clerks and browsing.

9. What was your worst cooking disaster? See my answer to question #5.

10. When was the last time you embarrassed yourself in public? Been listening to Wolves of the Calla on audio book in my SUV for the last few weeks. Was in the drive thru at What-A-Burger a few days ago. Clerk asked me what I would like to order thru the speaker. I answered "I'd like a double burger, may it do ya".......didn't even realize what I'd said till it was out of my mouth. About a 5 second pause from the drive thru speaker then "I'm sorry sir, I didn't catch that last part." I felt like an idiot, which of course, I am, so just another day in ghost land...lol

"do i need a $hit before i can take out my paycheck?"

She wasnt sure, and suggested i go to the bathroom, much to the amusement of the queue.
