I’ve told it here before. They filmed The Quiet Man in a town near to where my mother lived in Ireland. She watched over John Wayne’s kids during filming (you can see them in a scene in the horse race sequence). She also served as his unofficial personal assistant (and sometimes Maureen O’Hara’s) because the actors didn’t trust the PA’s John Ford assigned them. Ford didn’t allow actors to improvise, but Wayne and O’Hara would sneak off and practice the scene where he drags her off the train, and the ensuing “fight” scene, on their own. They had my mother serve as lookout so nobody would see them. She told me one day she saw Ford behind a tree observing what the actors were doing and he game my mother the “shhhhhh” sign when he noticed she saw him. She was too afraid to tell Wayne and O’Hara what happened and never said a word to them. My mother appears in one scene during the horse race, as one of the spectators.
