This thread enticed me to spend two hours today watching YouTube vids of Baryshnikov :) The fluidity and pSsion and abandon and precision with which he danced everything (not just ballet) will never cease to leave me gobsmacked and proud to be human.

Really great dancers can dance everything. He could. And formerly the moviegreats often had a background in ballet. If not professionally then at least in training. I think that goes for both Astaire and Kelly. It is the ease with which they move that makes it so beautiful. It seems so easy. You think, hey thats easy, i can do that but wow what you are mistaken. Don't know about Baryshnikov but know that both Astaire and Kelly were terrible perfectionists. Remember hearing an interview with Leslie Caron (from An American in Paris) remember the takes she did with Kelly and how they did over a hundred takes of the dancescene. If director, crew and his dancepartner were satisfied but he wasn't they did one more. But it was just the dancescenes. If they were singing or acting they let others decide.

I was on my phone for the former, typo riddled post (sorry) :) Here are a couple of non-ballet Baryshnikov snippets that make my heart sing.

This isn't great film quality, but White Nights is made for me forever because of the dancing. The music in this clip is wonderful, too.

A little cheesy, but watch how he MOVES. Seeing someone doing something beautifully makes me happy :)

Okay, back to work before I get lost on YouTube again--lol

Nope. Chicago is/was fabulous. I'm a huge fan of Bob Fosse choreography, going all the way back to Cabaret.
I too am a HUGE fan of Chicago. I saw the orignal Broadway production the the 70s with Chita Rivera and Gwen Verdon; I saw the initial run of the revival in the 90s with Bebe Neuwirth (but not Anne Reinking) and the movie. LOVE them all.
