I think both Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey would be great for the DT movie. And I have street cred... I thought Molly Ringwald was fantastic as Frannie.

I've been waiting to hear more of the feedback from fans before approaching him to ask his thoughts. I do believe he has a say in casting but not necessarily the final say so they could still cast who they want in spite of his objections but I'm not 100% sure on that.
No disrespect towards any actor that is being considered for the part. The words are written in the book. SK is the worldslinger when it comes to character description and development. I just do not see this particular choice filling those words.

...again, the characters are fully and very painstakingly drawn over the course of the series-deal with what's been provided-you can't get much more of a palette than what he's given for Gan's sake!, I just can't relate or understand why something has to be screwed with-just for the sake of screwing with it....

This. The article was most likely a ploy by a marketing agency, or the agency of the actor, to just drum up talk and stir the pot. Probably nothing more. Probably won't happen.
Now, Elba as the Man in Black, or the Crimson King, or the Tick Tock man, or Cort, or any of the other strong male characters in the story would be great as he is a real talent.
I really don't care if they cast Lady GaGa as Roland; I have given up on film adaptations of SK novels after the travesty that was CBS' Under the Dome.
...I COULD see him as Eldred Jonas....the descriptives here are strong, but I believe more malleable.....

That nails the reason on the head. Too much would have to be changed and would end up ruining everything.
....sigh.....not for Roland. I think that would lose some of the chemistry with he and Detta. There has to be that tension there between the two.
Another thought... Roland comes from the line of Eld and the book hints that his bloodline goes back as far as King Arthur and the days of Excaliber. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but King Arthur was a Brit, as pale and white as they come.
BUUUUTTT...Roland's world is not ours. His Arthur could have looked like anyone. I'm playing Devil's Advocate here--I'm not a fan of Elba in this role either--but that logic doesn't work in this case.

Bingo. Remember the DT byline - There are many other worlds than these.
There still will be. The flavour may be different but it still would be there.... and with the possibility of even greater tension.
