There are jellyfish in the lakes up here. I'd have never believed it if I hadn't seen them with my own eyes.

Ask him if he has tried a type of cream called 'capsaicin'
When you put it on at first it really burns like h*ll, but it does help - not sure how, but it made a difference for me.

Saying a little prayer for him - I could barely get out of bed (when I had it) - the pain was excruciating.
I will hazard a guess - if it actually ran after your son it could be a wolf spider - they are aggressive and will jump at you [little buggers!]
