So I get back from Doc Yankmolar to find a heavily bound parcel in the postbox. Got so many books in transit it’s a surprise when I tear the package open to find...
Wait for it...
Airboy Archives vol. 1, written by Chuck Dixon, art by Tim Truman, Stan Woch, Tom Yeats. This is some seriously badass early 80s (late Bronze Age) topshelf independent comics reading fun, cats and kittens, created by some seriously talented folk. Those names above should ring true to anyone who dug good gory 80s comics like Conan, Scout, Swamp Thing, etc. This was put out as a full color bi-weekly by the long defunct (and eternally mourned) Eclipse Comics, who revived the unique golden age character just as Marvel had done with Cap. Back from past also are Airboy’s wild supporting cast, like Skywolf, Iron Ace, the Flying Dutchman, the sexy Black Angel, and the even sexier Teutonic spitfire Valkyrie. Oh, and the Heap—comics’ first ever shambling, muck-encrusted Swamp-mockery of manhood. I had all these back in middle school, packed like sardines between Mr.Monsters and Twisted Tales. Anybody remember that bitchin Dave Stevens cover of Valkyrie? Achtung, baby!
So there. I win. I get first pick of the doughnuts, Jimmy...
