The series that really burned me on series was the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. The first book was sooooo good but the next couple books were a bit slow and Jordan wasn't writing very fast so I gave up on the series.

I have the first book and haven't been able to finish it. I'm maybe three hundred pages in. It's just such generic high-fantasy that it bores me. It gives me nothing new in world-building or style that I haven't seen before so that I feel like I've already read it a hundred times.

Finished The Opposite of Everything and quite enjoyed it. Now I'm reading $2.00 a Day, non-fiction look at people living on very limited funds. Sobering, to say the least. I have Walking Dead and Joker graphic novels on deck to follow, then back to review books :). If I have time, I'd like to start Pillars of the Earth--I picked up a copy, based on Kurben 's recommend, and it looks very interesting!

Pillars of the Earth is really good. I loved it, too. Was thinking about a re-read just the other day! Hope you like it!

About halfway through Neal Stephenson's Anathem, but in between chunks I'm taking breathers with Nightmares and Dreampscapes, just flipping through a re-read.

So far I've re-read Dolan's Cadillac, The Night Flier, Popsy, and am currently on Crouch End.

Anathem sounds interesting :) I think the last hard sci-fi novel I read was Dragon's Egg by Robert Forward. I'm too twopid to understand the science behind the story but I really liked it anyways. Do you have to understand the science behind Anathem to enjoy it?

I can grok that lol. What are some of your favorite world-building novels?

I've never read anything by Follett. Would Pillers of Earth be a good one to try first? He must be very popular, his kindle editions cost more than paperbacks :(

Most of his older books are spy thriller types, I think. I have only read one of those. Pillars is really good and the sequel, World Without End was not as good but still pretty good. I have the first two of The Century Trilogy but have not read them yet. Need to get the third one. If you like historical fiction, Pillars is a good one to start with!

The woods are lovely dark and deep
Started The Twelve, the second in Justin Cronin's vampire trilogy. Only read about the first 30 pages but found myself doing abit of skimming here and there. I just want to get to the story folks! Don't bog me down with mundane descriptions of crap.....
That book was one big slogathon for me.:icon_eek:

Just started Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein. It's technically what they call a Middle Grade book. My daughter's school is having the author stop by to promote his new book, the sequel - Mr. Lemoncello's Library Olympics, at the end of this month. She read this one in a couple of days and kept running in to tell me parts that she was enjoying. It's like a Willy Wonka character, only with books and libraries instead of candy and a chocolate factory. Pretty fun, so far, and there are plenty of pop-culture references from back in the day to keep older folks interested.

I'm slowly getting into Tabby's Caretakers (only about 50 pages in) and just finished Morality in BoBD this afternoon. Thought I'd read that SS - wasn't it included in Scribner's edition of Blockade Billy? If I did read it before, I remembered absolutely nothing, which is hard to believe because it is a very disturbing story.

Still waiting for The Book of Matt from the library. Am really anxious to read that one. Thinking of starting Sphere by Crichton while I wait. NEVER been one to read more than one book at a time before. Not sure why I picked up the habit in the last few years.
