Library had a few books for me today, so I'll be trying to get through them before my next review is due. Tonight is for Frank Miller's Daredevil series. I've never read the Daredevil books, just encountered him in other heroes' books, so I thought starting out with Miller was a good idea. I'd forgotten about Black Widow's costume in the late 70s--lol. Looks a lot like Mystique a little later.

Story wise, Miller's DD is the only one worth reading. Ah, as for Art, well...where to start? Colan, Romita, Wally freakin Wood fa gods sake. Miller himself. Buncha killers.

Our library just got three volumes of GN compilations of the Miller books, so I snatched them up :) I got through the first volume last night--the first couple of issues in the GN were Spider-Man comics, where Miller was the inker not the writer, but as they went on his role changed and the stories get stronger. REALLY enjoying the ride so far!

Oh man, gotta share this one with you fiends: pre code horror comic called Voodoo (#14, 1954), published by one of the sleazier outfits, Ajax-Farrell. Last story called Corpses...Coast to Coast. Now dig this:

After a long 'gravedigger's strike' (?) leaves the country with a surplus of corpses, a mysterious undertaker and a high-ranking government official turn the countless dead into a zombie army that takes over America, then the world. Seriously, a big jack-booted Zombie getapo. Weird scenes of them shipping box car loads of corpses into 'rejuvenation camps' where they emerge dressed in black, quasi-Nazi uniforms and wielding guns. Enemy's of the state are rounded up, killed, and turned into more undead troops. Russia, of course, tries fighting back, so the UWZ (United World of Zombies, natch) launches a preemptive nuke. The Commies strike back. But...as the narrative states, you can't kill zombies, of course, because they're already dead. But you can burn and maim them beyond usefulness and repair...

All kinds of weird subtexts and imagery here!

You can read this story for free at Comic Book Plus.

Its really really cool - worth the read and a great insight into the life of a mortuary technician - something im training to become
I've read a handful of books on the subject and find it fascinating. I always say that everyone should read The American Way of Death. Apparently, though, people in your line of business don't care for this book. I won't say you, but a lot apparently.

I havent had sight of that piece of work to be honest but ive found it on amazon. Its a subject we will all become familiar with at some point (sad to say but its inevitable). Alot of it is down to the individuals perspective, unfortunately though for some people, its just a job and it becomes cold, clinical and almost as though there is no compassion... There are comments I could make, but trying to be respectful I am probably best keeping my thoughts to myself lol ....

If you can get a cheap copy of the book, id highly recommend it.....I have a few on the industry from varying perspectives - APTs, to funeral directors, to works by authors with an interest (but not so much experience)

Started the 1st book in the paperback original series The Black Berets: Cold Vengeance by Mike McCray a.k.a. Michael McDowell last night. Pretty interesting so far. I'm not one to read any type of war/Vietnam books but this (the 13 book series) might turn out to be a worthwhile read. It's McDowell so it can't be bad......
