Hi y'all! I was on an O'Henry kick and man, do I love his writing! I still have a lot to read by him and I'll get back to him soon enough. I had to set my mind for the time period back then because words were used differently but eventually I caught on and I just love him. Been reading other works too.

I'm not going to post this in the RIP forum but I'll tell you here that I lost my eldest brother last month --my favorite brother out of three. He always treated me with kindness. He was a Preacher man and he was true. I drove to Toledo Ohio and I enjoyed the trip a lot. I followed my brother-in-law who carried three of my sisters. I didn't want anyone riding with me because I took the time to do a little 'me' time. And I had a room alone when we got there. Glad I did because by the time we returned to Georgia two of my sisters weren't speaking! Ha!

I'm sorry to post this here but . . .I don't think you'll mind.

My brother was very much loved. His funeral was four hours long and let me tell ya' dem folks got the 'Holy Ghost'! I've never seen such a lively funeral. Afterwards I spent time with my niece and my nephew. We went out and had a blast! I will be making another trip soon because the drive was wonderful and the countryside is beautiful.

I doubt it would have been enjoyable if one of my sisters rode with me! Ha!

Hey have you got your copy yet?

So sorry to hear about your favourite brother MadamMack - sincere condolences

You were missed on the board

No - I do not have a copy of End of Watch yet - maybe I can go shopping with hubby tonight. He is only home for one month and then it is back up North for him. He would normally get all of July off and then go back beginning of August but they could not find a replacement for him for the summer.

Take care!

Well this is embarrassing, the only O'Henry story I'm familiar with is The Gift of the Magi. I should probably read some of his other stories.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad you got some alone time. I know people mean well when they chatter away, trying to put things in your head to push away sorrow, but I would rather be alone with my thoughts and my grief.

I havn't bought End of Watch yet. I'm reading Finders Keepers. Finders Keepers is the first novel in book form I've read since getting my Kindle and I've been spoiled by the Kindle. I don't like having to use both hands to hold a heavy book and I don't like having to look for my bookmark which mysteriously keeps disappearing, and I can't read in bed since I'd have to turn on a light which causes hubby to yell at me :( Don't laugh but I actually tried to place my finger on a word in FK to get a definition lol. I might download EOW to read and maybe also buy the book since I have MM and FK in book form... maybe not, I don't understand why kindle books are so expensive - you can't get them signed, you can't loan them to friends (unless you want to quit reading while they have your Kindle), you can't proudly display them on a bookcase, etc. etc.

So sorry for your loss, (((MM))). Glad you had a good road trip, though--sounds like a lot of fun. I'm a firm believer in alone time on a regular basis. :smile2:

Seeiously!
For $15 I can buy at least 2 paperbacks! And the ebook prices on authors that I like rarely ever go under $9.99.

...I know funerals are supposed to be somber affairs, but just can't see that in your case sweetheart...he's loved and that room was gonna drop the big ole GAWDBOMB!...don't think I can ever recall an African American send-off as sad...too much great music and rousing of the spirit....

finished stevegane 's A Hero's Revenge...third in a series, great story. nice to see steve's talent as a story-teller progress. and considering his history he has accomplished something. wanted to read some more John D MacDonald but doesn't look like there's anything left after 78 book titles...one non-fiction, The House Guests. Thought about FK now that the EOW is out but I had a bowl of ice cream instead and am listening to Fogarty. decided to check out CJ Box, Off the Grid, a Joe Pickett novel. Sometimes I think! Life is just a rodeo!

May your brother be resting peacefully in a better world now. I'm sorry to hear he's passed. Funerals are like that in my family too - large and long :a11::0:;;D. I think you chose rightly to ride alone and sleep alone. You sound peaceful and that's good.

I love O'Henry - the shorts are all I've ever read, but I do enjoy them. There's a short collection in his honor that comes out annually. If you like his style, you'd like these.
