I'm interested in what you think of the Rand book. I'm a realist (and part time cynic--lol), and I found her books as laughable as the 'hug the world and everything will be okay'-type novels. It seems to me that neither type of book has any interest in how actual people act, both the ways we can be absolutely (and predictably) horrible and the ways we can be spontaneously wonderful.

I'll let you know when I finish the bloody thing, it's gonna be a loooooooong read o_O

Anyone who likes a good, really good, crime writer should try Tana French. The Likeness, The Secret Place, Broken Harbour, In the Woods and Faithful Place are all good. Irish writer who just got started.

Agreed. She's a favorite.

I agree as well!
I'll fourth that! I very much liked In the Woods.

I'm reading Alice Hoffman - The Probably Future. It's okay, so far. Not intense, but I don't think anything I've ever read by her has been. Sometimes I need a lazy kind of book. Anne Tyler books are a bit like that too.

I wonder if it will be lonely around here tomorrow while everyone is reading End of Watch. Y'all enjoy!

I finished reading The Elementals yesterday. I haven't been so enchanted by a story's atmosphere since reading The Shining. I saw it. I felt it. I accepted everything that occurred.

The Elementals was the first book I read by McDowell. It was creepy and I think the ending would be even creepier if I fully understood it. I tried searching the Internet for a discussion on the ending, but couldn't find much. I wish I could discuss it with someone!

I didn't understand the ending either :(
How were the Elementals connected to the Savage family? Because of Dauphin's great great grandmother who was the first to live in the house at Beldame? Because of their burial practices? Because of what Nails quoted? - Savage mothers eat their children up!

I thought it was interesting that every town in Alabama mentioned in the story is a real town except for Beldane. The actual town is named Dauphin (same name as one of the main characters). I thought for a while that Beldane might be related to Beldam, a demon in Romanian folklore, but I'm not so sure now. Beldam aka Belle-dame is known as the Other Mother in Neil Gaiman's novella Coraline. I might have to read it... after I read End of Watch! :)

Currently halfway through a reread of In Her Shoes. I'm not usually a fan of chick-lit but I've always liked Jennifer Weiner's style. Plus I know so many of the places her stories are based from my decades in Philly.
I thought the movie was exceptionally good - even my husband
got a bit choked up at the end when she read the poem at her sister's wedding

Yes, the movie was great.
Toni Collette is one of my favorite actresses and I've mentioned before she nailed the Philly accent (Sixth Sense). I don't care for Cameron Diaz, but she was a perfect fit for the role of "skanky sister".

Bought End of watch today! And I was entering the store with the intention of just buying King but i left with The Fireman too. Bookstores are really dangerous places!!! Havent started reading though. Agroup of friends and I had booked table at a fancy restaurant to celebrate the end of another floorball season and there was fantastic food, good beer and many laughs. Got home a bit late......

Hi y'all! I was on an O'Henry kick and man, do I love his writing! I still have a lot to read by him and I'll get back to him soon enough. I had to set my mind for the time period back then because words were used differently but eventually I caught on and I just love him. Been reading other works too.

I'm not going to post this in the RIP forum but I'll tell you here that I lost my eldest brother last month --my favorite brother out of three. He always treated me with kindness. He was a Preacher man and he was true. I drove to Toledo Ohio and I enjoyed the trip a lot. I followed my brother-in-law who carried three of my sisters. I didn't want anyone riding with me because I took the time to do a little 'me' time. And I had a room alone when we got there. Glad I did because by the time we returned to Georgia two of my sisters weren't speaking! Ha!

I'm sorry to post this here but . . .I don't think you'll mind.

My brother was very much loved. His funeral was four hours long and let me tell ya' dem folks got the 'Holy Ghost'! I've never seen such a lively funeral. Afterwards I spent time with my niece and my nephew. We went out and had a blast! I will be making another trip soon because the drive was wonderful and the countryside is beautiful.

I doubt it would have been enjoyable if one of my sisters rode with me! Ha!

Hey have you got your copy yet?

Cameron would take that as a compliment. ;-D

She looked pretty hot in those high boots (at least her sister's boyfriend thought so!):monkey::uh-uh:
