Re-read The Body yet again, probably read this one about fifty times. Sometimes I think this is Uncle Stevie's best tale of all. Goosebumps every damn time. It's sent me into another re-reading kick of King's earlier works.
How many times have you read Needful Things? I know you love the Castle Rock books. I think it'd be great if someone got the SK book discussion going.

I want to get that book! Is it as scary as reputed?
The Elementals was the first book I read by McDowell. It was creepy and I think the ending would be even creepier if I fully understood it. I tried searching the Internet for a discussion on the ending, but couldn't find much. I wish I could discuss it with someone!

It is a very good read. I was not disappointed with any of it. Is McDowell at the top of his game here? No, he achieved that with the Blackwater series and the books that followed. But, The Elementals is way better than anything John Saul or VC Andrews wrote back then (in the 80's). I say 'Go for it!'.

I think I saw a copy at the secondhand book store that's closing--I'm going to look tomorrow. I ordered all but the first Blackwater from Thriftbooks--they wanted too much for an 'acceptable' PB--over $13. I'll keep watching for a more reasonable copy to become available :)

I'm going to look for a copy tomorrow (none on Thriftbooks, and the one on Amazon is insanely priced, but I think I saw a copy at a local secondhand bookshop). If I can get it, I'll give it a go and we can discuss :) I so enjoyed the Blackwater series! In a strange way, it reminded me of Edna Ferber's Giant--that southern sensibility, I think, and the quirky as heck family members :)

Then after y'all finish the Blackwater series you can go straight on to The Elementals, because by then you'll be a real Michael McDowell fan!! ;-D

I downloaded the Blackwater series and The Elementals which may have been a mistake because now I don't know which one to start first lol.

I read on Amazon that McDowell passed away in 1999 :(

Yes, he has passed and it is sad for me as I was always waiting for a new McDowell book to come out at the bookstore. I was around back when the Blackwater series was being released with each installment arriving every month, like King did with The Green Mile, and I remember that the last book was held up for two weeks for some reason and I was foaming at the mouth to read it! I would start with The Elementals as it will give you a good taste of what will come in the Blackwater series. Let me know what you think when you're finished!!

Dana, you would think you'd died and gone to heaven at that used book shop! The owner has been running it for 44 years, and even after a month of sales, he still has over 300K books left, including many vintage paperbacks that are in phenomenal shape, each at a maximum of 50 cents/ea (bigger quantities have lower prices, down to 1 cent/ea if you'll buy his stock--lol). I only had a few $ with me, so I had to limit myself (until I go back on Friday, his last day). Today I got The Elementals, The Amulet, and Cold Moon over Babylon by McDowell, Bethany's Sin by McCammeron, a vintage (1955) copy of Wyndham's Re-Birth, a vintage The Talented Mr. Ripley (1959), Fear Itself (I'd not even heard of that one, though I'm sure you have), a brand new The Passage TPB, a book called Bedlam, and a book of actor's monologues for my daughter. Out of there for $5. I just paid $3.59 min for each copy of Blackwater books from Thriftbooks (kicking myself for not waiting, because he had 3 of the 5 I ordered), and a used copy of The Elementals was stupid spendy on Amazon. I'm very pleased, can you tell? :lol2:
