Hi y'all! I was on an O'Henry kick and man, do I love his writing! I still have a lot to read by him and I'll get back to him soon enough. I had to set my mind for the time period back then because words were used differently but eventually I caught on and I just love him. Been reading other works too.

I'm not going to post this in the RIP forum but I'll tell you here that I lost my eldest brother last month --my favorite brother out of three. He always treated me with kindness. He was a Preacher man and he was true. I drove to Toledo Ohio and I enjoyed the trip a lot. I followed my brother-in-law who carried three of my sisters. I didn't want anyone riding with me because I took the time to do a little 'me' time. And I had a room alone when we got there. Glad I did because by the time we returned to Georgia two of my sisters weren't speaking! Ha!

I'm sorry to post this here but . . .I don't think you'll mind.

My brother was very much loved. His funeral was four hours long and let me tell ya' dem folks got the 'Holy Ghost'! I've never seen such a lively funeral. Afterwards I spent time with my niece and my nephew. We went out and had a blast! I will be making another trip soon because the drive was wonderful and the countryside is beautiful.

I doubt it would have been enjoyable if one of my sisters rode with me! Ha!

Hey have you got your copy yet?

Just seeing this MM! Sorry for your loss! It sounds like his life was celebrated and you had a good visit with family. That's all I think anyone could ask for.

maybe not, I don't understand why kindle books are so expensive - you can't get them signed, you can't loan them to friends (unless you want to quit reading while they have your Kindle), you can't proudly display them on a bookcase, etc. etc.

Some books can be loaned. Go to amazon.com then Manage My Content and Devices. You should see a list of all of your books. If it says Loan this title, then you enter the person's e-mail address and they will get a notice that you have loaned them the book. Once they accept it, they have it for 14 days (or they can return it before then using the same method). It will appear in your Kindle as sort of grayed out. My dad and I do this all the time!;-D

Just finished Joe Hill's "The Fireman"......it was "meh", and is probably my second to least favorite book by him (my least favorite is "Horns", which I hated and didnt even finish).......At least I did finish The Fireman, I didn't hate it, I didnt feel like I wasted my money and it did have some flashes of brilliance in it......Granted, this book follows the awesomeness of NOS4A2 so it just may pale by comparison....I still think he's a very good writer and I wish he wrote more books

I just started this, 100 pages in, and I can't help noticing how real these characters are compared to his others. I've noticed some of his father's writing twists in this book also!

I'm about a forth of the way into Cronin's The City of Mirrors. It has a bit of a Stand By Me vibe. I like it :)
Could you read it if you didn't read The Twelve? I never finished that one, though I loved The Passage. I keep hearing good things about The City of Mirrors, but I'm not sure if I want to try to wade through The Twelve again.

There were things I really liked about it, but things that seemed done by rote as well. I at first put it up there with HSB (my personal fave), but on reflection I think it would be a tie with NOS4A2 (or slightly below). Horns is my least favorite, as well; Loved the concept, not so much the execution. It felt like an experimental novel that didn't quite work.

If you read the plot summary for The Twelve on Wikapedia, you should be good to go :) I read the summary to refresh my memory before starting The City of Mirrors and thought, Geeez Louise, I coulda just read this instead of the novel. If you do have any questions, please feel free to ask :)

End of Watch by Stephen King

End of Watch is one of King's smoothest books akin to a very aged Scotch. So satisfying. Not only is this one slick puppy it is as tightly crafted as a Swiss watch with genre conventions so seamlessly woven into the characters you never notice them until after the revealing moments.

When I opened the book, I saw no words. I fell into a shared experience.

Now I'm at a loss what to read next...

...waiting on The Freedom of the Mask by Robert McCammon to show up at the library.

Have you seen the mini-series Colditz? I watched it a few months back. It's a pretty good story.
Don't suppose you ever heard of, or played the board game Colditz? It was one of my favourites back in the 70's, I'm always on the lookout for one, to no avail. You had to go to different room, a bit like Cluedo, and collect items to plot your escape, depending on what route you wanted to take, rope, papers, food etc. Someone always had to play the Germans though.

The way it was portrayed in the movie I saw was this Colditz place was almost like Club Med for the prisoners. There wasn't a lot of deaths from what I saw- maybe they glossed over the bad-gunky stuff?
From what I've seen over the years, most of the inmates were officers and middle class. There was a mutual respect, all of them playing to set rules , as if it was a game they were playing. A bit like the way bank robbers and detectives treat each other (well here in the UK anyway) Most of them were guys who's escaped from other prisoner of war camps. Haven't seen the one you're talking about KRF, did it have
the glider that they built in the loft
