I decided i needed to read some of James Herbert. So i got four of his books for a cheap price at a used bookstore. They were The Rats, The Fog, Lair and Haunted. Are they representative would you say? Some of his i should try to add? Hadn't read anything of him before so this will be my first taste of him.

I've read The Rats and Lair, but can't remember either sorry, not necessarily a reflection on the story, just my Swiss Cheese memory.

I have read the 5 first John Carter books. The first 3 is actually quite good but then it is starting to go downhill. But i still prefer Tarzan. I just love the tale more. But i adore the name for Mars that he uses. Barsoom! Much better than Mars! Just the sound of it makes me like it.
I think I read all the John Carter books when I was younger; this last time was just the first three. By the third one they start to lose steam. The first one is the best in my opinion.

Has anyone read A Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling? I am reading it and getting a headache in the process. I'm getting all the characters mixed up and I am waiting for the man with a gun to walk into the plot. I love her Potter's books but I am finding this one painful to read.

After some really horrid reviews by members on here I decided to forgo reading this one. Alot of folks said pretty much the same thing as you said and also that it was boring. I really enjoyed her first 'Robert Galbraith' thriller and will definately read the second one.

Mmm, I was back and forth deciding to read this one, too. I initially wanted to read it to support Rowling, but I've read mixed things, so I decided to give it a pass. Glad to hear that her Robert Galbraith series are good :). Will have to get on those someday!

Kurben- I read The Fog way back when it first came out in paperback, back when I was a lad of 15 or so. I don't really remember too much about it other than it had a far amount of sex in it. I recently found a very nice copy of it at a used bookstore and bought it. I want to do a re-read at some point and see if it's a good story. Books tend to change from when you are 15 and when you are an adult. I have read a few short stories by Herbert and I do think he is a very good writer.

I finished Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes. A fast paced and creepy read with subtle hints of the supernatural that build up to an original ending. And the author also manages to convey social media in all its glory and not lose any pace from the narrative.

I started Without Frontiers, The Life and Music of Peter Gabriel, by Daryl Easlea.

Eh. It was all right. Not a huge fan of the "Well off white people behaving badly and filled with ennui" genre. Her Robert Galbraith books were much better.

For another opinion, though, I think either Dana Jean or SusanNorton just finished it and liked it quite a bit.

Beyond Fear: Reflections on Stephen King, Wes Craven, and George Romero.
Yet another dissection and study of the mans work. I just started so not sure how in depth it gets. Big fan of the other two guys in the title as well.

Oh and KURBEN(don't know how to "tag" someone) how did it go at the dentist?

Thanks for the interest. It was a disaster. When they started to get the tooth out it broke in pieces. one Part of the root of the tooth is still there. They tried to get it out butit was so firmly attached to my jawbone that they gave it up. They remitted me to the jawchirurg instead. I'm now awaiting a summon from them in the hospital. At least it doesn't hurt anymore but they gotta get it out or else it will sooner or later get infected and it could get real messy (they say). Sigh

I am still reading Casual Vacancy. For pity's sake...a mother of a teen is having a crush on a boy band member?????? Hand me a straight razor to slash my wrists.

Sad thing is, I know adult women who do this--women in their 40s who get all twitterpated over One Direction or youngsters on teen TV.

Just kill me now.
