Went to the eye doctor yesterday for annual exam (well, it's really quad-annual as I skipped the last 3 years).

Have to get progressive lenses as I am now experiencing slight deterioration in my near vision. Distance vision (which I've been wearing glasses for for the past 20 yrs.) has stayed about the same.

Good news is that my vision plan from work is pretty primo (Yeah government employee benefits!)!

Bad news is getting old sucks!

Today is work. I have a training session in about an hour. Then it's home to hopefully see the Red Sox clinch the division. That and try and kick this cold that someone at my cousin's wedding gave me. 'Ole SwiftDog is feeling pretty cruddy today :(

I'm trying to figure out a good hedge to plant around the perimeter of my property next spring. I can't seem to figure out the best option. I want something evergreen and hardy, since I live in the flipping desert, but something that can handle being heavily pruned and shaped and that will outlive me. American Holly sounds good, but so does Arborvitae. There's hybrid willows and privet, and gosh knows how many others.

Any advice?

How high do you want them to get? In desert climate, consider the evergreen Myrtle. It has small white flowers and in Fall it produces blue-black berries. Hearty, low maintenance, and can be shaped or left so. Low water usage.

Sprung Brody Dog from the kennel. He has been extra well behaved since he got home.

Took Brody Dog for a walk and we saw about 10 people that wanted to stop and pet him and tell him what a handsome dog he is. A gaggle of little girls ran over to pet him at the park and tell him how cute he is. Does not help with his ego!

Watched the Red Sox run their winning streak to 11!

Sad start to the game when they did the moment of silence for Jose Fernandez. Papi was crying :(

Brody Dog is a handsome dog and should be given a treat immediately!:)

Thanks Dio! I'll go look that up! And I'm looking for something that will "top out" at no less than eight feet, but no more than twelve feet.

That's pretty tall. You might then want to also consider Japanese Privet or Juniper. I don't know how Arborvitae grow in a desert climate, but I do know my Arborvitae (around 50 of them) are about 20 feet tall. And you need to be very wary of Bagworms, as they can kill an entire Arborvitae tree in less than a week.
