I still like my wristwatch, although I'm weakening towards the idea of getting one of those smartwatches...very "Dick Tracy"!

Here's some things that the internet/smartphones have made obsolete, or at least redundant:
Maps
Encylopedias/Dictionaries
Postcards/letters
Schedules (personal/transit)
Photo albums
Yellow Pages/Phonebooks

Add to that wristwatches, alarm clocks, calculators, voice recorders, mp3 players and cameras. I don't even need a flashlight most of the time anymore (becasue of the smartphone).

I still use most of the things on your lists.... :biggrin2:

The overall pace of life...too damn fast now.
Ghostie, I am so happy you said that... Most days seem as the world is turning too quickly, the kids don't want to interact unless it is with a screen, and people work harder and get less back for it. Spent today in the garden pruning and weaving the vines and clippings into floral shapes. So restorative for mental health. Hubby thinks I've flipped, but really? no. While bending and wrapping and twisting the smallest start of a story took hold in my mind... slowing down the have tos and doing some want tos should be mandatory every day.

Interesting post. I was saddened when on holiday abroad last year to see so many families allowing their kids to bring their ipods/pads to the table. Parents ate in silence whilst the children watched films with their dinner. It stuns me sometimes when I look around and everyone has their heads down. It all has a place but I grew up in a generation of being told off for reading at the table. Now we let kids play games and watch tv at the table.

In my work i sit before a computer most of the time and its annoying for the eyes and makes my head ache if i look too long (it is the same with television but there i dont have to look). It is very practical with internet but not as much fun. And i think future generations probably will get aches in their necks ffor looking down all the time. Can't be healthy in the long run.

I think you're right Kurben - our extremely sedentary lifestyle is causing so much ill health. That is why I am looking forward to retiring in three years - sitting in front of a computer at work is starting to feel like I am slowly killing myself. It all began when I read the sentence "Sitting is the new smoking" a couple of years back. That really put things in perspective for me.

people communicating on more personal levels. More effort was put into writing and reading, spelling. Now its all done on computers.
You know, part of my work is to correct peoples language so it is fit for general consumption. Before articles and things go out to the homesite. You can't trust computers at all. But then, people are even worse. They have become much worse, in my experience, of writing a proper sentence from start to finish. I think, but have nothing to prove it, that it has to do with internet.

Speaking of cellphones... I saw an interesting evolutionary development on the subway a few days ago. A girl with an extremely long thumb. It didn't seem to be the bone that was altered but the skinsection that joins the hand with the thumb connected with the bone much further down. Result: she had a ca 50 % longer thumb than I and could bend in every direction. Thought that would be good in handling cellphones. OK, i admit it. I am interested in evolution so the sight made me speculate.

Not quite what you're describing but made me think of Uma Thurman in Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. ;-D

Honestly, I have to say nothing. I was alive in the days of party lines and three channels on the telly. Of having information limited to magazines and books. I like having instant access. I like being able to connect with people such as yourselves. I like that if I have any question about just about anything, I can get the answer.
I understand that there's a lot that's fallen by the wayside, but there's still a lot we can do by simply turning off the computer. Snail mail still runs and there are libraries full of books that we can still get. It's not technology's fault that people don't involve themselves in the real world anymore. It's a choice they make. the world's still out there.
