...by that van way back in 1999? I don't want to be bringing up the bad-gunky here, I know it's a sore spot with some of us. I wasn't a member (don't even know if the SKMB was around back then?)then. I didn't even know it had happened for a couple of days afterwards. Which is strange for me because I keep up on my Entertainment Tonight viewing religiously and read the paper and watch the news but for some reason it just slipped passed me. Or maybe I somehow blocked it out? I do remember being at lunch with a friend and fellow King fan when she asked me if I had heard the news yet about the accident (which had happened two days prior to this lunch). I remember my stomache dropping and my palms started to sweat. I couldn't finish my lunch. At that time it wasn't known how badly he had been hurt, so it really was a scary thing to go thru. Not as scary as what Steve and his family had to endure. I just remember being scared and feeling so bad for all of the Kings. Thank the Powers That Be that Steve is still here with us all and still able to churn out those books that we all so desperately love!!

I was in L.A. It wasn't fun to learn and even less fun to wait around for updates. I guess about a month later it became clear he was going to pull through...but that his summer had been roont. I could empathize, although not on the same level: I broke my leg a long time ago at the tail end of May, so my summer was roont, too.

When I heard about his injuries on the nightly news I felt like I had been punched really hard in the stomach. I was living in the same city in California where I live now. I sent a get well card with a long personal note to the hospital in Lewiston where he was recovering.

...since I barely can remember where I live on a good day, I can't recall-but I DO remember the overwhelming nausea that consumed me, and even though I hadn't become a nurse as yet...I had a pretty good working knowledge of the bodily systems-and realized just how fuc*ed up he really was...man, I was so relieved when I saw how his spirit, family support and good medical care turned the tide...he was a lot closer to the clearing than I think most people understood....

If I am recalling correctly, the SKMB was around during the accident. I was a lurker and remember all the concerns.
It was such a shock, and Scott you are correct, as one looks back, he was much closer to clearing than many understood. Too close. All those surgeries and then the set back with pneumonia later. Thankful he is still with us and his family.

I was actually working for his publisher at the time. Obviously, lots of worries throughout the company. Can't remember a lot of details since working for S&S was not my favorite job and I have tried to forget my time there as much as possible. Still, I remember being quite concerned for someone I felt I "knew" for many years.

True, Scott, Marsha has stated on here a few times that we really didn't know just how very close it was for King. I guess had I known I probably would have had a melt-down. King's novels have always been my, I don't want to say 'life-line', but it just seems like his books have always 'been there' for me, if you know what I mean. Always a HUGE part of my life. Thru the bad-gunky and thru the good times, always a King book to fall into and lose myself in. I never want that to end. Ever.

He calls us "Constant Reader" but I wonder if he realizes what a Constant Writer he is to us. His works are such a part of our lives, woven into the fabric of everyday life. If we see a St Bernard, it's Cujo. If we see an old car, it's Christine. In some small way, he's in our lives every day. After all, it's because of him that we all come here and see each other's smiling faces every day. We're very lucky to still have him.

Only a few years ago, when I joined the board. I had missed a bunch of years in the 90's and early 2000's (married, began career and family) I 'had moved on', yet, in reality, reading and writing is at my core and I couldn't 'move on'. Investigated, and found he still writes, his wife and family write, he got clean and survived a horrific accident, hooked all over again. Wanted to read everything he has written, and also everything his family has written.

I think he gets reminded just how important he is to us all every time he steps out his front door and goes into the public places somewhere.
