I tried it twice while visiting my sister at college, and both times nothing happened. I didn't feel any differently, no rush, no buzz, nothing. It was just more of an experiment than anything else (I'll try just about anything once if it's not too risky--I'm the kid who ate a worm to see what it tasted like). Anyway I didn't really seek it out and none of my friends use it, so it's nothing I ever took up. I don't judge pot users, I feel it's no worse than alcohol, and in many ways it's less destructive due to the health/painkilling benefits for people with various conditions.

Not in years, for a couple of reasons: first, I have seen friends and family slide down that slippery slope--for some people, I absolutely believe in a 'gateway'; second, it's illegal and I won't do anything that puts my family at risk. Losing my kids, either legally or functionally, is the worst thing I can think of.

Yeah, I didn't go over my reasons for not indulging, but when I was in college, part of my rebelliousness was to defy peer pressure. So I didn't do it there. Then later, I was in the Marines. Yeah, let's not give them a reason to throw me in the brig (jail). Then I was a family man with a career, and the potential risks far outweighed the potential benefits. And now here it is, years later, it's legal, and I just never gained an interest.

Besides that, I grew up in an atmosphere of secondhand (tobacco) smoke, got highly sensitized to that after I left home (never smoked even one puff myself), watched it slowly and painfully kill my parents who deplored my hatred of the stuff, and the thought of putting foreign substances into sensitive lung tissue is somewhat repellent.

To be fair, though, after reading the thread by Lepplady on the oil's potential therapeutic benefits, I talked with Grandma about a fantasy of a grow operation for the sole purpose of extracting the oils. Neither one of us had a moral problem with it. We don't have the space, time, or money to actually do it. But we had no problem with it.

Was never exposed to it, so glad. I'll stick with my glass of chardonnay at 2300 and be happy as a clam. Want to keep holt of the few brain cells I have left.

Although the more I read on the benefits of weed for those who are ill, the more I am in favor of medicinal use. Mz. Lepplady speaks of an oil extracted from the plant that is very beneficial.

Not completely convinced on the oil except in certain tested cases (epilepsy, etc), but I'm not opposed to medical use. My mom has MS and is allergic to just about all of the MS drugs (except those that are really chemo drugs). Her Dr. told her that if it was legal in our state, she'd prescribe it. I'd absolutely be 100% behind that.

I don't, because I don't have a source or money. Or seeds (I'm a decent greenthumb).

It probably would have saved my life to have all three...I think I've Frank Gallaghered myself with alcohol.:facepalm_smiley:
Oh gosh - wasn't that liver transplant/kidney removal episode too funny? Just when I think they've reached their limit of crazy, here they come with more.

I've toked up maybe 6 times, got high only twice.

A very peaceful marshmellowy existence.

Last time high, almost 20 years ago, I was lying in bed. Fully aware, thinking good thoughts, and I wanted to turn over onto my other side.

It took me a good half-hour to gather the motivation to do so.

The college "wake and bake" is probably not a great idea.

Edit: "Shameless" is starting to lose me a bit, but I'll keep watching for a while.

Same way here. My life experience tells me that dramatic claims usually turn out to be less than advertised. If it does provide a bona fide therapeutic benefit, then I don't want to see it suppressed. On the other hand, I remember Laetrile, so I'm cautious.

Never learned to inhale for smoking purposes--either tobacco or weed--so my one shot at it in the '70s wasn't much of a test. Haven't ever had the urge to give it another go. Have never ingested it either. Am in the camp of legalizing it for both medicinal and recreational use and believe it's just a matter of time (and sooner than later) before the country goes that way. Also believe people should be allowed to grow a certain amount for their own personal use rather than having to buy it, just like they can do with alcohol.

First, I want to thank everyone who has responded so far for being so candid. I really appreciate it. After posting this thread I thought maybe no one would answer. But that has not turned out to be the case.
Second, I realize that I never disclosed my experience with pot so I feel I should. I smoked pot very irregularly back in high school and for a few years after. If it was once a month, that was a lot. I am now 53 and probably have not smoked since I was 23 or so. When I did smoke, it was always with friends; never alone. It wasn't peer pressure, but it was not something I ever really initiated. All that said, I did start drinking alcohol in bars when I was 16 (the legal age back then was 18 and I was always big for my age) so I am no saint. While I never became an alcoholic (though God knows the disease runs in my family), I certainly drank more than my fair share in my youth and into my early 30s. These days a few glasses of wine puts me out, so that's about my limit.

I generally do not. Have a life long friend who started smoking weed in high school. He has been smoking it most every day since (over 30 years). It takes a toll, as he isn't 'as sharp' as he was. He works at a low level job, but is content to go home at night, get high, and watch tv.
I work for a major US company (one that you would all recognize immediately, even those of you in Europe) in a professional office setting. There are a few coworkers of mine who proudly let others know they have smoked most of their adult lives. These people are in their late 30s, early 40s. And you know what, it has definitely taken its toll. They are not at all "sharp" even though quite intelligent. They cannot handle the normal workload and it shows. I run rings around them with hardly any effort. I am not making a blanket statement that prolonged pot use does this to everyone, but it certainly is my experience here at work that it does take its toll.

I have maybe 10 times or so in my life, but I just don't like the high. What I do enjoy is the feeling alcohol gives me, so I stick with drinking, which is a shame because smoking weed is way less harmful to your health than drinking alcohol is.

I am 100% for legalizing and regulating it the same way alcohol is regulated. It makes no sense whatsoever that alcohol is legal and weed isn't. Honestly, if one were to be legal and one illegal (not that I think that should be the case, they should both be legal), it should be the other way around. Alcohol causes way more health and social problems than weed does.

I used to. I didn't drink as I grew up with an alcoholic. Weed was my choice. I stopped smoking it when I realized I didn't like the people I was buying it from. I said to myself if it wasn't for needing a dealer I would never hang out with these people, so I just quit. Learned to drink mostly moderatley. If I was in a place where it was legal, I'd probably take it up again. No one should feel weird for never having toked. It's a personal decision.

It can also a great alternative to pain meds and it's not addictive like most pain meds.
