As I'm getting older(I'm 32) I've noticed I'm getting worried about change. For instance, take Newsagencies. They reckon that they all might die out within twenty years as people don't buy so many magazines as they used too. Also, there margins are shrinking because things like Lotto and Powerball are being sold in Supermarkets now. Also, younger people who have their frigging mobile fones like there sheep don't buy newspapers. I've reversed Dylan's comment(if he said it): I don't trust anyone under 30.
Another thing that is dieing out is things like the local butcher, and hardware store. I went in to this massive hardward store out at Wallsend and I don't now how they're going to sell all the stuff.

Good thread Mr. Cranky! I suppose when I first noticed how quickly the world moves on, sometime in my 30's I think, it disturbed me. But now that I'm older, 56, I'm used to it.
Some changes call for opposition, some are worth fighting for and some I just roll with. The trick is learning, which change is which.
It's good to know that humans are very malleable and we generally adjust well.

I am afraid of change when it comes to society's attitude not so much with personal change. Ever notice how manners seem to have disappeared? Go to a doctor's office and see how quick a young man will get up to offer a woman his seat.....does not happen much anymore even when it comes to elderly ladies. Things change and not in a good way. I think I am turning into a bit of a luddite.

I'm in my 71st year on planet earth. Have seen my fair share of change- both good and bad. I get the concept that change is growth, improvement, moving forward. I've watched technology advance. I've watched "progress" take place. It does cause me to stop and look back at history-- as they say-- history repeats itself. Is all this change really good? The positive side - yes, the negative side not so much. Humanity's pendulum has swung way too far in a negative way --- Responsibility, empathy, cause and effect.
The OP mentions the loss of the mom and pop businesses due to advancement/ change. When was the last time you went an entire day without your cell phone? Yes, there are advantages- but there are also negatives. Loss of communication skills- expressing ones emotions by your face, not a picture. I understand there advantages- instant contact in an emergency/ instant news, warnings. But is all of this really necessary? Spidey steps off the soap box and quietly joins Buckwheat and Pyro.

News agencies should not die out with TV and the internet. If I am going to share a news item on a message board or social media I look where the story came from. Reuters should be reliable whereas I wouldn't believe anything from Fox News even if it were 100% true.

Worrying won't do you any good and change is constant. What works for me is angrily muttering things under my breath and using the word "Idiots!" a lot (I include myself in the idiot pile as well). It's cathartic. I don't like a lot of change myself and just the other day we were talking about the demise of the local butcher shops. All times are interesting but these times, since the industrial revolution onward, have shown more technological advances in one persons lifetime as compared to the history of civilization. It's all exciting but too mired in capitalism for my liking. Capitalism is okay, it's just that greed gets in the way.

I agree mal I remember going to the butcher shop with the sawdust on the floor in Toronto (Wow am I getting old!) Actually you can still go to Harris's Meats on Arlington or Tenderloin on Main Street if you wish to venture that far.

There is also a place up on North Main (heading towards Selkirk, past the Perimeter Highway) that sells all natural meats and they have an old fashioned butcher shop up there. (It is called Frig's, by the way).

Just a couple of tips for you, since I know you are in my local area.

As long as there are butchers, there will be butcher shops. Just as, as long as there are hangmen, their will be gallows.
On a brighter note, as long as there is King, there will be horror.
and romance, and thrillers, and self help manuals, and mysteries, and how-to's, -- he is so much more than horror.
