Most people do. Only the strange ones become goalies. But i most have been rather good. I remember a tournament against other schools. We lost the quarterfinal but afterwards the opposite team told me i was one of the best goalies they come across. Never got that kind of comments from my own team.
Goalies are the most important team member and need to be taken good care of! :biggrin2:

I could be really patronising and say how great the women's game is, but the standard is still terrible if the truth be told. It has grown in popularity, but it will never be a mainstream sport.

I will give the women credit for their honesty and integrity though. You don't see any of the diving, cheating and all the rest of the crap you see in the men's game. I feel embarrassed for the vast majority of male footballers who fall to the ground like they've been shot because someone has gently pulled their shirt or put a hand on their shoulder. It's pathetic to be honest. All male players should be made to sit and watch every game in the women's World Cup and then be asked to explain how it is the women can stay on their feet and play fairly but they can't.

I think thats a bit unfair. The standard today is very uneven which makes result like 10-0 possible when a topteam in the World cup meats one rather weak team. But give them the same time that the mens soccer had and it will get more even. And to compare men vs woman the men will always run faster and so on. But just as we honour 100 m sprint runner for both men and women i don't see why that wont happen in the future for soccer too.

Come on, it's really not very good. The goalkeepers in particular are dreadful. I've got nothing against it at all, but I'm not going to pretend that the standard of women's football is particularly good just because it's nice and politically correct and the right thing to say. The very poor attendances for this women's World Cup tell you all you need to know about lowly the majority of people regard it.

On the other hand, I'd much rather watch women's tennis over the men's all day long. Far more rallies and action without all the huge serves in the men's game that no one can return.

I didn't say that. The Topteams (Germany, the US, Japan) i think are quite good but the rest has obvious things to fix. I just don't think it will stay that way. I think that with time more and more teams will reach that level. If you look at mens soccer from the seventies the play went in a slower speed than today. Mens soccer evolved and got better and i don't see why that won't happen in womens soccer too. Thats why i think this straight comparison between mens and womans soccer is unfair since they are at very different spots of evolution of the game. Rome wasn't built in a day (or even 10 years).

I disagree. Considering women's soccer is still relatively new on the world stage, it's come a long way. 1999 was the first year women's soccer became relevant and it's gotten better since. It's not as if one country is dominating the tournament.

Older players, like Abby Wambach, get exposed for not playing up to par. Watching Sydney Leroux run with the ball and attack the flank is fun to watch. Megan Rapinoe handles the ball really well too.

I have to agree with Kurben and Tyr. Some of the passes they make and the things that they do with the ball just me go "wow." I mean, it's stuff I couldn't have done on the field, except by accident. Of course, I was a rank (and I mean that) amateur.

Now, you put a top women's team against a top men's team, and it's no contest. But that's to be expected. You put a top men's tennis player against the top women's, and the man's probably going to take the match every time. But that doesn't mean that the women's matches aren't fun to watch - if you like to watch tennis, anyway.

There was a period when women's tennis had more stars than the men. I think it was the early 2000s. Soccer in the US can get there. Mia Hamm is probably the biggest soccer star the US has ever had.

The US team looked a bit sloppy against Columbia. They're up against China on Friday!

And to be candid, helped with a very favorable PK and a non-red-card. But I still thought they played the better game, more polished, more aggressive, more solid.

Germany missed a PK. Hope Solo got into the kicker's head. The US had a lot of opportunities and they took advantage.

Feel bad for that poor gal on the England team.

Brutal.

Yep, gutted for her. But on the positive side, that's the best performance from an England Women's team in any World Cup (true, there've not been many as it's still a young and growing area of the sport...though the first men's World Cup didn't take place for 40-50 years after the formation of the English FA among others, and even then hardly anyone too part (well...England didn't; not until after WW2, iirc)).
There's a lot of stuff over here about them having 'joined' the 1966 (winners) and 1990 (World Cup semis) club, but I disagree. These women are out on their own. They've made history by themselves, for themselves, and now have their own 'club' - just as the men would insist on having if the situation were reversed. So no riding on the coat-tails of their success for the underachieving (and usually underwhelming) men's team, please.

EDIT: Although, I thought there was a hint of offside as the Japanese winger tried to make the pass beyond the full-back. Their striker seemed to be goal-side of the last centre-half at the moment the ball was played.
Their pen also seemed to be a case of first contact outside the box, while ours...well, it was very soft. Minimal contact at best and she decided to hit the deck fractionally too long after it was made. Don't suppose she actually was the sub? ;)

It's a shame it ended the way it did, but England should be proud. I thought they outplayed the Japanese girls for the most part. Too bad that one shot hit the crossbar and that header went wide.

Yeah, not a bad effort at all, considering Japan are also the holders.
A case of 'revenge is sweet' in the final for the US, though?

Going to be a tough test I think. The US had some trouble with Columbia's quickness and Japan is even quicker I feel. The US defense will get a workout, but they should be well rested.

This tournament has proven how important experience is. The only ezception in the semis was England. If skill had anything to do with it France would have beaten Germany. Then i think they would have had a good chance to win against the US too. But experience won over skill and talent as often is the case in big tournaments.
