Convincing win for the USA. Great vision for the long range goal (not to mention skill and technique in beating the defender). Japan's 'keeper, though... :umm:
Suffice it to say the long-ranger should never have beaten her. Dunno about sixes and sevens, she was at eights and nines. Not a clue how she should deal with it (back-pedalling at speed and keeping her eyes on the ball might have been a start).
But, chalk that one off and it would have still been a resounding win, and thoroughly deserved.
Now for the men's - and it's surely only a matter of time. ;)

Feel bad for that poor gal on the England team.

Brutal.

My whole rec league soccer career was as a fullback (defender). I sorta know how she feels, having had too much juice once on a pass back to the keeper and watching it sail into the corner of the net. But I didn't have the eyes of the world and the hopes and dreams of my country on me at the time.

And congratulations to the US women!! Grandma and I were watching the game, and ... the first goal after three minutes? 4-0 at one point in the first half? We were gobsmacked. And watching the replay, if the announcers mentioned it, I didn't catch it. Key to that play was not just the corner kick and the midfielder coming across but the two players who swept the defenders out of the lane. Great set piece.

And watching that kick from midfield... any number of times in my soccer career, I'd see the keeper way out, and we'd be trying to move the ball upfield, and I'd yell, "Just kick to goal!" The difference being that it would've been a chancy lob for us big strong guys, and Carli Lloyd launched a 50-yard rocket.

So glad they won. They don't have to always be compared to the '99 team. Now they left their own mark.
