I found a complete set of the first edition Ballantine paperbacks of The Lord of the Rings (from 1965) in decent condition. These were the first authorized paperbacks released (after the infamous Ace pirated editions), the ones that launched The Lord of the Rings into the stratosphere! In the same haul, I also found the first paperback edition of The Hobbit and The Tolkien Reader (both also Ballantine from 1966). In all my used book travels, I've very rarely come across these (and then they are usually in pretty bad shape). Usually the earliest editions of LotR you'll see are the Ballantine second editions from 1973. I'm so excited to have these on my shelf! :)

I go to the Wee Book Inn in Edmonton....several locations and two cats to a store. They are owners of the store and one cannot get a job there unless you are a cat person. The human owner died last year and his family is keeping all his principles about cats and book. If you are in Edmonton, give it a try. I found Duma Key there a week after it was out for seven dollars. Someone was kind and gave up their copy. True book lovers go there.... and pussycat people.

Awesome find! I didn't know that they had 'flowing' covers to them.

I bought a book in the thrift store yesterday - never heard of the author but it might be good.

Something about it - I read a couple of pages in the middle - felt a little like Anne Tyler. Anyone else here like Anny Tyler? She's kind of a "day in the life" writer, but there's always some value in her character development. This one reminded me a little of Ladder of Years - that one really pulled me in

Didn't Anne Tyler write "The Accidental Tourist"? I read one or two of her books but it was quite a while ago. I remember enjoying her writing style.

One I read was called "Breathing Lessons"

Yes - those were both pretty good - there are movies of both of them - William Hurt and Geena Daivs in The Accidental Tourist; James Garner and Joanne Woodward in Breathing Lessons. I really like Ladder of Years and A Patchwork Planet. Her characters are always so quirky -my kind of people.

It's been a while, Hi Everybody!
From A Buick 8(hardcover)
Fire-starter(hardcover, book club ed.)
Salem's Lot(hardcover, book club ed.)
Thinner(hardcover, book club ed.)
Storm of the Century(hardcover)
I was happy to find a used book store in my area- I never knew it was there! The store does trade-in's for store credit... Pretty good at $2 credit for a hardcover and $1 credit for a paperback. I'm keeping my eye on the SK section, but I'm really only missing a few of the older titles and his most recent; Mr. Mercedes, Doctor Sleep, I think two of the newer short story collections.
The store does have a decent selection of Organized/True Crime books.

Today the mailman delivered a pristine 1st hardback copy of Virgin by James Patterson and also my ARC of The Regulators. I bought the ARC on Ebay, not knowing that it was listed on Ebay by a wonderful member of our SKMB, who shall remain un-named to protect their innocence. :love:Thanks for the autographed postcard (I'll place it in the book that is featured on the front)and for adding a hard-to-find item to my collection!

Today I found an unread hardback 1st of Delores Claiborne and an unread paperback copy of Under The Dome Part 2. I also bought dvd's of three Bette Davis movies: Deception, Watch On The Rhine and The Great Lie. Also got the dvd of The Great Train Robbery (which I don't remember ever seeing and it's directed by Michael Crichton!) and an unopened deluxe dvd of Somewhere In Time, which I won't watch until I feel the need to CRY!! Also picked up a 1st hardback of The Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton (not a good book but have to have it for my collection).
