Toaster ovens are da bomb for baking polymer clay! Lepp, have you got a pasta machine yet? You can do some amazing blending with them. Like so:

It's called a "Skinner Blend" and it's deceptively simple. You can use it to make canes, too:

Wow! that polymer clay central master index has a ton of great links, thanks! I looked at the steampunk link. One of y'all posted a pic of a steampunk bee I really liked. I didn't actually know what steampunk was until I watched a Psych episode where Shawn and Guster go to a steampunk club. Now I'm fascinated by it. I want to try my hand at polymer clay. I may have said this before but I'd like to try making little animals. This is the booklet I have.

I'm very interested in making canes, especially for Pandora style beads. I'm going to try that, thank you!

I watched a tutorial about how to make canes, and it's crazy how the canes keep the pattern so exactly when they're reduced from this log the size of a silver dollar to a tiny cane smaller than a dime. I never would have thought the pattern would stay!. Fascinating!
In this video, she talks about the process for awhile. She gets started really reducing the cane at about 6:12. And the flower shape stays pretty exact all the way down to the smallest size.

The key is patience. I learned this the hard way. I build my canes large and then refrigerate that for an hour or so. Then I reduce a little, chill a little, and so on until I get to the size I want. Even then, it will sometimes distort. Letters are especially hard to keepin line. Using a registration strip helps, though.

I know, there are some very cool projects on there. I got into steampunk when Rush went with that theme back in 2010. I've done a few steampunk pieces since then, including the steampunk bee. Here's my steampunk picture frame for a fundraiser we did before the Vancouver Rush show last summer (for the Alberta flood victims):

PS. I'm also a Psych fan. Only 5 more episodes!? :distress:

ohmygosh, that frame is awesome! I really like how you collaged it. Where do you get the watch parts?

*sniff* I'm going to miss Psych. All the characters were "characters". I don't know if that makes sense lol. I guess I like Psych for some of the same reasons I like SK... Interesting characters :)

I usually get parts on ebay: steampunk parts | eBay

I also buy old watches and strip them (naughty me). You can get some manufactured things at craft stores: those perfect cog wheels came packaged. From Michael's, I think...

Psych is good, for me, for the same reason. Sean and Gus and Jules and Lassie... great characters. I will miss them but I intend to buy the entire series on DVD. ;)

I have been asked to do a wedding cake. The theme of the wedding is Alice in Wonderland and the bride wants 2 regular 9x13 cakes, side by side done in a checkerboard pattern and then a heart cake centered in the middle on top. I have been looking at pictures on the internet and I think I will do a diamond-shaped checkerboard on the bottom but am kind of stuck about what to do with the heart. I don't want to just do a heart, I would like to make it look like a tart, to tie it in with the Alice theme. I was just thinking maybe I could use jelly to center another heart on the top heart cake.

I don't know the bride, she is a co-worker of my mother in law's. They have a very small budget which is why I was asked to do it. But it makes me mighty nervous to be responsible for someone's wedding cake. I've only ever done one, and it was the more traditional, round tiered kind.

I will run this idea by the bride but wanted to ask all you wonderful, creative people for your opinions before I did. Do you think that sounds like an ok idea or should I keep thinking and searching for inspiration? (Any suggestions are very much welcome! :))I could use a red frosting, I suppose but red frosting tends to stain the teeth which isn't really something you want, especially at a wedding.
