Sambo's restaurants, which had a really interesting evolution.
It was started by a couple guys who got the name from a fusion of syllables taken from both their real names, first name Sam for one, last name starting with Bo for the other.
Well, there was also this story called "Little Black Sambo," which people took to be African (and the stories were generally illustrated as such) but were actually Asian Indian (hence the tigers in the book). Being even the child geek that I was, I wondered how an African family could be confronted by tigers, which are not indigenous to Africa. Anyway.
Rather than renaming or disclaiming that connection, they embraced it, to varying results. The story was either charming or racially patronizing, depending on the sensibilities of the one reading it, and when you step into an arena like that, it's a "please all, please none" environment. So that was a problem. In their expansion, they had other corporate practices that helped seal the ultimate doom.
I liked that restaurant, though. Kind of like a Denny's or Village Inn, but more enjoyable.
