I still really like this one. No blood. No gore. No torture porn. No naked teenage crap.

24. Friday the 13th (FTV)

An unseen killer is bumping off teenage camp counselors at Crystal Lake. Yes, you are reading that right, this is a first-time view for me, even though I've seen countless clips and scenes (including the infamous ending) on cable TV and the like, even though I've seen three of the sequels (one in the theater!) I never got around to actually sitting down and watching the original beginning to end. I'm happy to report that it exceeded my expectations, as I had heard mixed reviews from even big horror fans who don't consider it the best of the franchise.

Intended to cash in on the Halloween movie mania that was sweeping the country in the late 70's, Friday the 13th has similarities: a dark backstory involving a child, promiscuous teens being punished by a mysterious killer, skeptical cops, a strong female lead. There's a "you thought it was over" ending that's reminiscent of "Carrie". We get a young Kevin Bacon and a bevy of pretty young things who are unaware of their impending doom, despite warnings from the local crackpot. There's also a bit of a twist for those who think this is just about that guy wearing a hockey mask.

But what really sets this film apart for me are the great practical effects by Tom Savini, who isn't afraid to pour on the blood and show us the violence up close. There's also great use of the lingering hand-held camera to heighten the tension, especially evident during a nerve-wracking scene where the heroine is simply fixing herself a cup of coffee: we're so certain that something bad is going to happen, we just don't know when. The music is effective, especially because it's not over-used, and the wide silences are often more chilling. And of course, the repeated use of the now iconic "chi-chi-chi-ah-ah-ah" whisper that announces the presence of the killer. It's easy to see why this film succeeded and has become a huge horror franchise, even before Jason put on a hockey mask.

4 out of 5 stars.

27) Happy Death Day (2017) FTV – Think of this as a Groundhog Day type slasher film. I actually thought it was pretty good. FTV for me, but daughter and hubby had seen it and watched it with me so we could follow it with the sequel. – 3.75/5

28) Happy Death Day 2U (2019) FTV – This picked up right where it left off on the following day, and we find out what caused the time loop but when they try to fix it, it gets much worse (or better, or something). This one was more comic than the first, but overall still decent. 3.5/5

I see a few Hammer titles on your list. I haven't seen a Hammer movie yet this season. I'm going to have to fix that.

30. Not what Stephen intended, but I still think it's pretty good. And as I get older, I'm seeing Shelly with new eyes.

31. This is a very creative little thing.

32. Old school cool.

33. This is a French series on Netflix right now. I really liked this. Creepy, unsettling, odd.

It was one of my foreign series where the landscape it an important character. I love the sets, scenery and characters in foreign entries.

I always watch them in their intended language because it makes me focus. I can't multitask. I have to watch to read the subtitles.
I would recommend watching it in French. It adds its own mystery to it.

And the witch at the beginning deserves an Oscar. That woman was just so good in her part and so threatening!
