Zara Cully, who is most noted for her role on The Jeffersons, was always some voodoo priestess in the movies. Or mama somebody. I'm sure she's done a ton of things, but I always run into her in blaxploitation, voodoo things.

Some reviewers thought this was maybe the best one of the season, but I was underwhelmed. Interesting premise, but the execution left me bored.

There are a few episodes that were good, but overall, I wasn't that impressed. What I did like was how the story starts out with the first sentence, and we watch the show and we finish with the second setence. I found that very creative and fun.

While I could use each episode as part of my list, I'm just going to count it as one thing. And, the season won't finish until after Halloween. So, the episodes they have shown to this point I'm just going to count towards my list. And while I can't give a complete review of the season since it isn't done, I can say that even though this isn't their strongest season or even close, I'm still having fun with it just for the 80s flashback crap.

26. Hammer House of Horror -- BBC TV series, 13 episodes

While I could count all 13 of these episodes as each episode was 75 minutes long, I'm only going to count it as one. And yes, I counted Two Sentence Horror Stories as individual things and they were only 20 minutes. Why the difference? Because I multitasked so bad during HHofH, I don't feel that it would be fair that I count them individually.

I watched a body of work. It wasn't great. I'm posting a trailer for it, but it's like 6 minutes long. I'm doing it because that's the format I've been using. But don't waste your time watching it. bwhaheohaohahaa!

27. The Innocents -- Second Viewing

I'm doing something here I don't think has been done in our list in the past. I am counting a SECOND viewing of a movie I watched early in the marathon noted as entry #9. fushingfeef let me know that there was a Criterion Collection copy of this and I purchased it this last weekend and watched it with commentary.

So, while yes, I have already watched the movie for my list, I'm adding it again as it was like watching a whole new movie with the commentary playing while the movie was playing. I really enjoyed viewing one of my most beloved movies with the added insight by cultural historian, Christopher Frayling.

And, I'm going to watch it a third time without the commentary, just the movie, with the enhanced look and sound improvements. During Fraylings' examination of the film, I noticed scenes that had been shortened to show on TV. I may count it a third time, we'll see. But just know, I am watching it a third time with all these bells and whistles that have been restored to it or have been used to enhance it.

Frayling said in the commentary that the scratchy video was cleaned up, and the scratchy sound quality was cleaned up. I'm not sure what I'm going to feel about that. Does that scratchy add to the atmosphere of this gothic story? Or, will I appreciate the restored version better? Did they make it better than how it was originally filmed and is this ethical to the film? Do we dishonor the original look, feel and sound of the movie by using technology that wasn't available when it was originally made?

I'm not sure I'm happy about that.

I'm not sure I'm happy about that.

My attitude towards film restorations is that if it sticks as closely as possible to the director's original vision, then it's fine. No director wants bad audio or visual quality, aside from when they are obviously deliberately going for that effect. Using the original camera negative ensures it's the best possible quality.

There are instances in some older DVD's where they use too much digital correction, edge enhancement and brightness, but Criterion is not one of those offenders. You can be assured you're seeing the best possible presentation with Criterion.

Now, I don't always listen to 5.1 surround mixes on older films because generally the original presentation is in stereo or mono on films before the 80's (there are some exceptions, such as the original Disney Fantasia which was meant to be listened to in multi-channel sound). Criterion always offers you the option of the original sound mix.

So don't sweat it, enjoy!

Agree. I'm going to listen to it with the new just to have a well-rounded feel for the movie. After, I'll decide if I listen to it with original or enhanced sound in the future.

As far as cleaning up the film itself, it depends on the film. Some restoration is beautiful and needed. But in this case, I'm wondering if the old grainy scratchy flm is better for this gothic story.

I'm excited to watch it again.

18. The Ritual (2017) (FTV)

Four best friends recovering from the untimely death of their pal go on a doomed hike in the supernatural Nordic wilderness. While the plot is pretty overly familiar at this point, this is more than just another "*******s lost in the haunted woods" story because the characters are a bit more complex and understandable, and the acting is excellent. The scares are parsed out a bit at a time in a way that kept me watching and wanting to know more. I particularly liked how the past kept coming back to haunt the main character and how his failure to act at critical point came full circle when it's time for him to make a tough decision. I do feel a bit more could have been done with this plotwise but this one was a cut above most.

19. Crawl (FTV)

A daughter must free her injured father from the crawlspace under the house as hurricane floodwaters rise and crocodiles threaten to eat them both. This is one of the best animal horror movies I've seen in a long time. It's nice to see that a genre that has fallen into comedy and camp (Sharknado, The Meg) can still provide effective thrills and scares. The crocodiles in this film are not unrealistic monsters given supernatural abilities or intelligence, they are simply apex predator animals doing what they do: looking for food and shelter while fighting off anything that gets in their way. Much like the criminally overlooked 2010 "Burning Bright" (which involved a hurricane, a shuttered house, and a tiger), you have to accept the unlikely setup, but if you do, the rewards are great. Incredible tension, excellent acting under grueling circumstances, and thrilling entertainment!

20. Halloween (1978) (special guest reviewer's FTV)

Since I watch the original Halloween just about every year, there isn't much new I can say in a review. Instead I'm having my 14-year-old daughter Jillian review the movie, who was seeing it for the first time, for a fresh perspective. Here's her unabridged review!

A deranged man escapes from a mental institution and returns to his hometown to terrorize a group of teenagers. The movie built up a lot of suspense with its tense scenes, and it felt oddly satisfying to see each victim die, giving the movie a delightfully disturbing feel. I thought P. G. Soles’ performance was particularly fascinating in the scene where she died, although I otherwise found her to be the least convincing teenager ever. In general, however, the group of teenagers seemed very realistic and had excellent chemistry with each other. I found it refreshing that there weren’t really excessive jump scares, which left me more creeped out and curious to see more rather than just leaving me jumpy.

5 out of 5 stars.
